has anyone ever tried to fit the new 4 piston calipers to an older FLH? It should just need a custom mounting bracket I would think.  That and likely a new rotor.  does that bolt right up?

I am hoping someone would have done this already.

Yes & no.  If you replace your lowers they can.  If you buy a new wheel & put 1" bearings in, you can use the new axle.  Any more questions or clarifications, call.  I can not help you in getting the parts, only info!

I put 07's on mine but it is a 96 RK. The adapter is from bikers choice and on Ebay it was about $48. bucks. They work great. I will tell you though that the 07's use dot 5 and the 89 I think you said it was an 1989 uses dot 4. You can use up to an 06 and still use dot 4. I used Brake cleaner- sprayed through the lines and I am using dot 4 through the system now. Been about 5 months now.

Fast Harley,

if the lowers are changed and a 1" axle is used would one not lose the mechanical speedo unit on the older models ?  i have not tried this mod on my 90 so it just a question.

later.......................

Okay, i might be missing something here.  Why would the lowers need changed?  I understand that it might not bolt right up, but a custom bracket would take care of that.  As long as the rotor spins inside the caliper that would be all that matters no?   Has anyone put a newer rotor on an olde bike?  do the mounting holes line up?

Paco, as long as I run the proper brake fluid, there should not be a problems should there?  Unless the mastercylinder for the front brakes "needs" a different fluid than the brake itself.  I will look into that.

Thats the one beemervet, thats the kit I put on mine. I can't do a photo till the weekend, because the bike is in the shop until Thursday. I added a new EFI unit by Terry Components and of course the first one was bad so hopefully it came in today or maybe tomorrow and it gets installed. Haven't had my bike in 2 weeks, I don't know how the boys and gals do it threw the winter.

Hey Phat, i know this has been a while, but I was wondering if you could put a picture of that caliper adapter (bikers choice 48-2679) on the site.  I would like to take a look at it.  Also, are you aware of any instructions I could look at on the internet.  I have some 2000+ calipers I want to put on my 89 FLHTCU.  Just want to take a peek at it before I buy a set.

broke c7 - I guess it all depends on how much work/trouble you want to go through. This past february I put all new (used) calipers, new floating rotors, new brake lines, race tech suspension parts and lowers forks (2003 units) on the front end of my 98RK and it all bolted up very easily. Even someone with my wrentching ability can accomplish it..
I just took my time and picked up the parts here and there and decided to do it while it was up for the winter. It is not as expecsive as you might think, but I know it is all HD parts and servicing is easy, and the brakes - work like a champ compared to the older versions we had.

I am about to find out how easy it is to bolt up.  I bought brake caliper adapters from Bikers Choice part # 48-2679.  It is supposed to allow the 200 up calipers to bolt up to the 85-99 forks.  I tried calling the company that was selling them on ebay and they were not a whole lot of help.  I needed to know if there was a left and right side.  since they couldn't tell me, I went on the assumption that it is universal.  Looked that way in the picture anyway.  I won't know for a couple weeks as I have to go get them at the US border.  Worst case is, I am out $100

You may also need new brake lines, because the new calipers have the fittings located near the far end of the caliper, you're stock lines may not reach. My buddy just did this a few weeks ago. He bought all the lines and fittings he needed thru JP cycles. Don't ask me the part numbers, I dunno. But I will tell you he is VERY happy with the new brakes compared to his stock 1985 brakes.

Thanks blue, I will keep that in mine.  I may put those brakes off for a bit though.  I am itching to get the bike on the road.  parts come back from paint next weekend and I want to get it back together and hit the road.

What is the deal with the two lines going into one caliper?

well not that I am that mechanical, but on very simplistic terms I figure it is twice the braking power! Ha!  However I have an engineer brother in law that thinks every system should have a back up.

The 2 lines were done by John Covington with Surgical Steeds here in Scottsdale, he's a custom bike builder and said for what he lowered it in the front that this way I wouldn't have a problem of the lines getting pinched or in the way. Been like this for 5 years, looks weird and cool but it brakes just fine. Even before I went to the 4 piston change over it was like this.

Hey Phat, I am trying to figure this out.  Where do the 2 lines come from or go to.  usually there is one line that runs from the splitter under the lower triple tree to each brake caliper.  What does the seond line do?

Blueglide.............
You think it would be too much trouble to ask your buddy what brake lines he had to use?
No, I don't need double lines on each caliper.

C7, I really couldn't tell you, because I don't know. The brake line from the reservoir goes to the left caliber  and then splits into 2 lines and a short line goes behind the fender and into the right caliber. Weather this done to minimize the lines into 1 instead of 2 or to maximize pressure I don't know. Maybe one of the guru's could help us. My mechanic @ Phoenix Choppers here in Cave Creek, said he had never seen anything like it, but since it worked why change it. I had to agree.

hey Phat, hope you are still out there. \\; I have finally got my bike on the road and will be thinking of changing over to the 2000 up caliper. \\; Someone mentioned something to me that might be an issue though. \\; The ''89 calipers "float" on a fixed rotor. \\; I was told that the 2000 up caliper is fixed and used on a "floating" rotor. \\; So if I go to the 2000 up caliper I have to spring for the floating rotors. \\; Owch. \\; In your photo, I did not see a floating disc. \\; Is this information that I am told wrong? \\; Was there any issues. \\; \\;

Broke I''ll try this again. 4th time trying to get back to you, mine are the stock but chrome rotors, and when you apply the brakes it makes a whizzing sound. I tried Lyndall pads but they didn''t work. Switching to floaters is my next step, but no funds now.
