I'm taking a CCW class this Saturday and will use my Ruger p-89
for that, but will need to purchase a weapon for concealed carry.
Any thoughts on the Kel-Tec PF-9 9mm?
Relatively small and light. Basically want it for when riding with
the wife.
Any info appreciated.

There a good carry pistol

i used to carry a Glock 36 slim line .45

but felt that evrey time i rode my shirt came up to much and everyone could see it .

so i went to a S&W 642 38 special .

with a in the pocket holster works great .

and it is also less visable if you get in a situation where you think you may need it to just stick your hand in your pocket and have it ready to go rather than reach to your side or ankle or what not .

but to answer your ? yes i think kel tec makes a nice affordable fire arm

Check your state regulations. Here in Nevada if you qualify with a revolver you are good for all revolvers. If you test with an auto you are only good for that model. Good news is that you can test with as many weapons as you choose. You can also go back with a different auto later on at a small charge.
I think Kel-tecs are fine. I have the 380 which is smaller than the PF9. Some would argue that it's not powerful enough (380).

So if I understand you correctly, your permit has the (only)type of gun you can carry listed on it?

not in MI HK

i am from MI as well

you can carry any registerd gun in fact if you have a ccw and want to carry a friends registerd gun you can .

as long as it is a registerd gun and you have a CCW .

Here in PA it can even depend on the county you live in. Allegheny county used to require the exact weapon to be listed by serial number, and the permit was specific to that weapon. Washington county did not.

As for the Kel-Tec, I had a P11 and really didn't like it at all. To me it was cheap and clunky. It may well have been the worst firing handgun I ever fired. I took it out twice and immediately got rid of it. The much newer PF-9 may be a far nicer weapon. Just my 2 cents.

I hear ya HK

I used to think that as well but compared to other states we are ok .

just got to read and understand them [:@]which they way there wrote sometimes is very open to interpitation.

ecspecally the recipracting laws .

i go to ohio a lot . you can carry there with our CCW but they have differnt rules as far as what is considered concealed .

not really an issue on the bike as it is in a holster the whole time but its in the cage that gets tricky .

some dumb rules and laws .

but i do think everyone that wants to carry should have some sort of training . there are a ton of dumb asses out there.

Yep, IIRC, if your in a cage, it has to be visible. So much for concealed, eh.

I currently have a Kel-Tec PF9 and from time to time just slip it in my front pocket. I'm not a big guy, 5'10" and it rides well.

It also sits real well in a jacket pocket.

Now, if you want a LITTLE pocket gun, check out the Kel-Tec 3AT or the new Ruger LCP. Both are .380 Autos and are similar in price. Here in Columbus, GA I can get the 3AT for $269 and the LCP for $289. The only advantage, I can see, is that you can lock back the slide of the LCP for cleaning. Neither gun locks the slide back on the last shot fired. (The PF9 does lock it back on the last shot)

I can qualify with any auto AND any revolver. My permitwill showthe specific auto by brand and model but not serial number. It also willspecify ANY revolver. I can go back at any time to add different autos.

Yes the P-89 is too big to carry but I will just use it for the class.
As far as I know I don't actually have to use the gun I will carry.
The last time I took the class (let my permit expire) any weapon
could be used andmy permit was not weapon specific.

I don't have any experience with the Kel Tecs, but one concern I would have would be sturdiness. Thier popular P3AT has a reputation for unparalleled concealability, but it is also a poor shooter (as in uncomfortable for long range sessions, and not very durable over thousands of rounds). I applaud them in making a 9mm for CCW even if it is at the cost of size, but I have no idea if they have beefed it up some by comparison to the P3AT. Either way, I have heard they do have very good customer service.

Just outta curiousity, how much do they charge you to add other pistols?

I own both a Kel-Tec PF-9 and a P3-AT(.380). I would recommend both as carry weapons. You will carry these pistols, as they are both very concealable and light. I am of the belief that concealed carry means concealed. That is easy to do with both of these pistols.
Here in Ohio you do not need to qualify with the same pistol that you carry, but I did qualify with the PF-9.Both of these will startto sting after a few magazines at the range though. The trigger guard smacks the side of your trigger finger during recoil. I agree that these are not fun range guns. That being said, you should put in the time at the range to be comfortable with them. These are both Double action only (no safety, no de-cocker) so you need to keep that in mind when carrying.
The sights are better on the PF-9, and being a little larger it is easier to get a sight picture quickly. The .380 is much smaller and lighter and I tend to carry it more.
My $.02

Thebusiness I use has additions for free for 10 years. You just hook up with a CCW class for the shooting portion. The state charges $15 to add it to your permit.
If I choose to initially qualify with several weapons (actually there is no limit within reason) there is no additional fee by the business or the state.

I just picked up a KEL-TEC PF-9 today. It's not a target gun and the quality is far from a Kimber but it’s much more concealable and for less than $300 a real bargain in my opinion. BB

I picked one up today. I loved my P11. This feels nicer and is MUCH easier to conceal. Gonna have a holster sewn into my vest this weekend!

I took my PF-9 to the range today and ran 100 of my reloads through it. 115 gr Sierra (#8110) JHP in front of 5.5 gr of Power Pistol. When I took my time and squeezed the shot off, it hit in the center ring in the black, 21 ft away. It wasn't difficult at all to consistantly hit the black, but to hit center, it took "deliberation".

When I backed the target up to 30 ft, it wasn't as impressive. It took deliberation to just hit the black, let alone the center. But as I shot, I became more efficient at hitting the black.

The front sight, with its white dot is nice, but I wish the rear sight was like a Glock's. I had to loosen the hex screw on the rear sight and slide the sight as far right is possible to make the sight picture work. It was hitting left at first.

The trigger pull is long. I simply pull the trigger, see the hammer come back, stop it, and then "squeeze". Recoil was not severe, but it an't no .22. After shooting the 100 reloads I was glad I was out of ammo.

For my next 9mm reloads I'm gonna increase the powder charge by a little bit and see what happens. I may decrease it by a little bit, too.

The Sierra (p736) book says: Power Point powder and 115 gr JHP (#8110)
min - 5.1 = 1000 fps
5.4 = 1050 fps
5.7 = 1100 fps
max - 6.0 = 1150 fps

Since I shot 5.5 gr today, I think I'll make 50 reloads of with 5.4 gr and 50 reloads with 5.7 gr. I may even do a few at 5.1 - I never load max, so 6.0 is not gonna happen.

Anyways, the gun shoots nice. I've also got a Lone Wolf 9mm conversion barrel coming for the G27, so I'll have another gun to compare it to.

Reb,

I'm pretty sure that there is not a .40 for a g26, something about size tolerances. Apparently, the outside measurements of the .40 barrel in the g27 barrel is a little bigger than the barrel in a g26, the g27 won't fit into a g26.

I think the aftermarket barrel makers take a big g27 barrel and bore it out to 9mm, stopping short of the .40 it is designed for. I'm think that would make the drop-in 9mm really strong.

The g26 barrel, designed for 9mm, isn't large enough to bore up to .40 - not enough wall is left behind to handle a .40 round.

Below is the place I got my two barrels, I looked and can not find a .40 to drop into a g26, only the other way around.

I agree with 07 Softail I had one and it did sting me after practicing awhile. I also didn't like the way the trigger stacked up. It is however a reasonably priced full capacity 9mm. I bought the wife a Bersa .380 and I just love that pistol. It points great has decent sites and is comfortable to hold and shoot. Yu can get some pretty hot 380 loads then only downside is lesser capacity than alot of the 9mms.

I installed the grip pads and grip sleeve from ktaddons.com (http://ktaddons.com/) on my PF-9. They make a noticable difference in felt recoil (not muzzle flip but the shock).
