Default I need an education......

I am thinking about building a custom and need to know what I am in for before I take the leap. What I want to build will look like the Sucker Punch Sally (SPS) "66" bobber. http://www.suckerpunchsallys.com/sixtysix08.htm Hopefully that is a reasonable goal for my first full build. I would probably buy the SPS frame and use aHarley EVO or TC motor.

What will I have to do to get it titled, licensed, insured? What are some good resource "How To..." books forcustom bike building? What will be the most difficult part? From experience, what are your best tips before I get started?

Thanks in advance,
RJ

Just go to the local bookstore and there will be plenty of books. There's one on building choppers. My one advice would be price your parts and make sure it all works for the bike you are trying to build. Lots of times, these things get out of hand and your are in deep with money that you could spend on buying a SPS outright. Your labor is worth something also. Save all receipts and you shouldn't have problems getting the bike titled as a custom bike. Also, custom bikes are more expensive to insure. Check with your stat's DMV before you start.

Good luck on your project.

Think about buying a crashed bike with paper and a good motor, there are several frame builders out there that will take the neck from the crashed frame and put in on the new frame.

No trouble with registration there. The new 'custom' is essentially titled as the donor, then isurance isn't an issue either. There are a few insurance companies that allow you to insure customized bikes for a good bit over what the donor is blue booked at.

Getting a full on custom titled can be easy, or it can be a nightmare, allot depend on your states DMV, do your research. Like a previous poster has said they can turn into money pits real fast, be sure and save all of the receipts and get an MSO from the frame builder if you decide to go full on custom.

Pros: They are cool

Cons: Expensive to insure

usally only good as a bar hooper

costly.... you'll spend 12-15k till your done if you keep it a year you should only lose 3-5 k , longer then a year you'll need to take your loss and run with the first offer you get.

plsu many many more cons vs pros.

Check out clubchopper.com and see what those guys have to say about the custom bike market, you'll see what I mean

just my .02 but I have been there done that.
