wydopn231, Central and southern California have very mild weather in mid May. An occasional rain but, usually, nothing serious. Temperatures would normally be between 60-80. Northern California will still be a little cool but pleasant. You shouldn't have any severe weather in mid May.
Good luck on your trip, I will be going the opposite way at the same time. California to Florida. Have fun.

Chris: So. Nevada will be cool in the morn from daylight to about 9am and then by afternoon will be hot. If you have a windshield be prepared to clean it a lot from the bugs. Las Vegas area usually has one or two 100 deg. days by the end of May. Northern Nevada can be much cooler or can be comfortably warm. ............. BC

I'd recommend the southern route. Montana can be nice, but it's almost 600 miles across and the last third is through mountains. The Beartooth Pass doesn't usually open until Memorial Day, and even then, it's open and closed some. Idaho can be a little warmer, but you still have the altitude factor to contend with.
