I too have had my bike built, lots of cash to get it to where it is but my problem is this. I can't seem too find a good SERT tuner in my area. I traveled 1 1/2 hours to leave my bike for 3 days $450 only to get it back slightly better than when it went in. I don't have time or patience to do this again.

Is there somebody you know of in the San Fran Bay area that can tune correctly? I will go from Sacramento to San Jose if there is someone in between. You obviosly have lots of knowledge and love from the brothers in the forum that I would respect any input you may have.

I have heard of places like H.P. Xpress in Campbell and RC Cylces in Fremont. I have heard good and bad about both but it has been a while. Hoping they have improved.\

Thanks Doc. I will be setting up a meet with them. I have heard that the pricing is reasonable and they will allow you to sit, watch and ask questions.

Hey doc, great info - do you know any good places in the colorado area?  I'd drag mine out to where you are, but it's all the way across the country ;)

I was talking to a couple of dealers in Colorado last month about some training but nothing ever came of it....I guess I should give them a call to follow up.

Doc, given me a buzz if you happen to be coming to sweden. I'll accomdate you, so i can get good, knowlegdable advice on how a dynojet tune is done. Maybe my chapter will want in on it. Maybe i have to come schooling in yr shop. It would be a worth the trip though its far from stockholm.

Thanks Doc1 for the SERT questions. I'm hoping there's 5 questions for us PCIII owners too. How 'bout it?
Just spent $300 for a "custom map" for my PCIII by Speed's that took all of about 30 mins. I know, I know - but it does run better and will actually make 200 mi. on a tank of gas at 102 hp and 106 lbs/ft. Also, Adlerx and Jonnyd mentioned a tuner and shop in Portland OR that until now I thought was highly regarded. Got any referrals for a good tuner in Washington State? Anyone else know of one?

Doc1 I need your help and expertise in regards to Dyno and super tuner from HD. I just got my first harley and its night rod special. I bought Vance and Hines exhuaust ( not installed yet) waiting to reach thousand miles before it get installed. I already decide to go for super tuner. I had a hard time to find shop who can Dyno it for me. There is one HD dealer willing to Dyno. My question are: should I rely on their work because they are from HD dealer? Do you think I am making good decision of getting super tuner than PCIII?

Ask the 5 questions...if they cant answer all of them right then take you bike out of there...simple as that. Where are you from?  How about I send you a brochure of my training services to view and if they look goood to you take them and give them to the owner of the store or the GM....SOUNDS GOOD TO ME.
Drop me a line at hdmd88@yahoo.com  352.242.9616 and I'll shoot the Brochure up to you.

Your the Angle to all HD member. I'm from San Jose California. About my question of DYNOing my Night Rod using Super tuner and Indy model Exhaust (Vance And Hines). My bike is still a baby reaching 900 miles. Is it safe to Dyno? Is my bike ready for an upgrade? HD dealer in (detail of installer send to ur emal) is willing to take my Bike and install the complete set. My doubt is if they do have same knowledge like you to tune my bike. I will greatly appreciate if you can help me contacting them and ask those question for me. Doc with lots of thanks in advance. Hope someday i can return all this favor to you.  Nytrod

I truly thank you for your kind words, they are very well appreciated but I think it would be better if you talked to your tuner.  Print out the 5 questions & answers....call the tuner and ask them over the phone....I'm sure you will know if they are knowledgeable enough at that time.
Again thanks for your support.

I found out there is an Indy shop in town that has a Dyno today, so I called to ask a "few questions" I quit listening after "it'll only take me 2 hours to Dyno your bike if you have a PCIII, about 10 if you have a SERT. You gotta understand that the PCIII is so much more powerful than the SERT". ....Dam, thought I might be able to get a tune here in town, now I'll have to drive 2-3 hours to a tuner.

Doc, my question is; if i get one of these Japs workshops with a dyno to tell me what my AFR is would it help to make a better tune/table? I've the pro super tuner, SE air cleaner & mufflers. I have gone through the training video. Like you said with the correctly measure AFR, tables & VE synchronising make the bike peform better.

You need to know the AFR at every break point such as 0% to 100% throttle at 1000 rpm to 6500 rpms.  In other words between the front and rear cylinders there are about 300 break points, just doing a 100% throttle run on the dyno will not give you all the information your need, it will however tell you what you need at 100% throttle. Sorry but there are no short cuts to tune it right.

Here goes attempt #2:
Dear Doc1,
As the owner of a PCIII do you have 5 questions for us to ask?  If there are none or you simply don't know of any just say so. I can take it. No disrespect intended - just wondering.

Same questions apply...

Tuning is tuning... whether it be a PCIII or SERT/SEST.....

Steps to take, knowledge of the system, etc....

The only one that is changes is the synchronizing the VE's.... Ask what is the TARGET AFR is at WOT, Cruise and Idle....

As Bob said there are no VE tables involved with the PCIII, nor do we set the AFR at one level.  On a PCIII the tuner should be adjusting the fuel for cruise, mid range, and then WOT.....something like 14.0 in cruise area, 13.5 in mid range, and 13.0 at WOT (these are examples only)
The tuning is done by Steady State procedures in the lower throttle positions, (2%~10%) and by roll ons in the higher throttle positions, (15% and up)  depending on the build.
There won't be as many documented runs made as a SERT but timing and WOT runs will in the area of 10 to 15 pulls anyway.
Dyno time will still be 3.5 to 4.5 hours with a PCIII if your doing both cylinders on the advanced resolutions, two hours top for a one cylinder tune on the low rpm resolutions.
Bottom line is the PCIII isn't nearly as complex as the SERT so less tuning runs are required.

It looks as if you really have your ducks in a row. I wish I was closer to you so you could tune my ride. You seem to have a better grasp on things than anyone else.

Hey Doc, I had sent you an e-mail about what happened with RC Cycles and how dissapointed I was. Well I found a shop in Oakland that was very informative and knowledgable. Godspeed in Oakland Ca.Left my bike for a week and got it back running 100% better. Even got extra 5hp and 5tq out of her. Their new machine cannot be made to lie and that is a conversation I had with the owner. Don''t know the model #. They told me to go out and see if I could find a problem in any load, rpm or throttle position and they will fix it. This shop is 100% pro. They took approx 12 hours and 100+ runs to get her right.

Very happy with what I got. Even though it took many hours the price stayed the same. They believe in giving the cust. the best job possible and actually doing it not just saying it. I got to talk to everyone involved from service writer to tuner. I was impressed with the profesionalism that the complete staff practiced.
 \\;
So for all of my brothers out here in No.Cal., if you need a good tuner, don''t hesitate and go see the staff at Godspeed in Oakland Ca. Spend some time visiting the web site for some inside info.

Doc 1, i had my bike dyno tuned (with parts listed below) before i found this thread. it surges terrible between 2000 to 3000 rpms and still runs really hot. i took it back last week and he adjusted it 5 times but never on dyno \\;with me test riding it between each time. it still surges!! he told me to bring it back again if needed which i plan to do as it drives me crazy. i asked him your 5 questions and he didnt answer like you said. as for the AFR...he said he adjusts it as he goes...does that make sense? also...he puts something in the exhaust that measures it and gives him a reading. he says that reading is what he goes by...again does that make sense? \\;
 \\;
i figured he knew what he was doing because \\;he has been in business 15 years and has built some wicked motors. his dyno is15 years old...would that make a difference? are newer dynos more capable? he has show me a graph but it looks nothing like some ive seen on here. im starting to wonder if i need to go somewhere else and start over. \\; do you know of any GOOD shop in central illinois?

I''d say he is changing numbers but don''t know why or what it is doing. Believe me when the VE tables are set right the tuner will know the tune is done right and there will be no reason for a repete adjustments....he''s guessing and doing a bad job at that, find some where else. American HD in AnnArbor and Grand Rapids HD are doing good tunes...try them....that''s the closest dealers I trained to you.
