I've seen bike's with the ignition switchwired so you can start it when the ignition switch is turned to the right first position keeping the headlight off then once its started switch it over to the second or farthest right position turning on the headlight. Does one just simply switch the wiring between these two post's or what? Any help would be great. Those cold mornings need as much juice as possible to the starter and not shining on the ground!

I'm not sure about your particular model, but on the later softails there is a short yellow jumper wire between two posts on the ignition switch. Remove it and the lights will not come on until you put the switch in the "lights" position. If you have a Harley service manual for it (and you should), it will show the wire. JMHO, YMMV, etc.

On my 1980 FXWG, taking off the yellow jumper wire on the top

left side of the switch, took care of the headlight. I will email

a diagram if you need one. If you don't take the battery out

first, be careful what you touch.

I am a hugh believer in cutting that wire, when I pick up my ride, outside the dealer the guy came out went over a few basic things, one was do you want the headlights on all the time ? No I said, he pull out a small pair of needle nose and just cut that wire, thanks I said, little did I know then but years later that got me home one day, when the charging sys took a day off, being able to turn that headlight OFF, leving what was left in the battery to run the bike is what got me home instead of a tow.

Now since I put duel elements in, I have running lights and turn signals, they are wired so headlight off but the running lights are on (also in the second position) this way if that happens again at night at least I have something : - )) not so much as me seeing but being seen, riding in back of a friends ride with his working headlight !
