Just converted my 02 Fatboy to a trike for he wife. I used a MotorTrike kit instaled by a dealer. She really likes it. Here comes the BUT. If you use the foot brake only it will take until next week to stop this thing. To get it to stop any quicker you really have to lay on the front brake. Is this normal, or is there a stronger rear master cylinder. By the way MotorTrike uses drum brakes. I have a call into the factory to see what they think.

Thanks, Randy

You need to use the rear brake along with the front or you will be buying a whole lot of front brake pads.

I am 52 I been riding since 13-15.  Whether or not this is actually true, back when we were out running the last of the dinosaurs it was said that 75% of stopping power on a motorcycle was the front brakes. And I have heard this throughout my motorcycling experience.

It's the same on my DFT Street Glide -- stopping with the rear brake only works for very slow speeds.  I've got to use the front brake along with the rear to stop.  As others have said, this is consistent with what the MSF course teaches:  always use both brakes when stopping, and the front brake supplies 70% of the stopping force.

Just adding to what everyone else is saying,,,,,,use front and rear brakes together.  Some people on two wheels limit use of front brake for fear of locking it up, but as stated before most of braking is from front.  In a straight line stop useing only one brake a bike will stop in a shorter distance  useing just the front brake than just the rear.  On a trike you can be much more aggressive with the front brake.....your not going to fall if it locks up.  The key is to take front and rear brakes to the limit without lockup. Not trying to beat a dead horse here but try to get her into the habit of always useing the front brake, learning to control it.  If she gets into a habit of using the rear because its easier (leg stronger than hand) she could be in real trouble in an emergency..

If hand stength is an issue, try replacing front caliper with an upgraded caliper, 6 piston, and a good floating disc that will reduce chance of warping with heaver use do to extra weight of trike kit. Also make sure you have a good steel braided brake line that will not swell when brakes are applied. All these things will help make the front brake easier to use (better braking with same amount of effort)

Sorry if I babbled on, but I know so many accidents could have been prevented with proper brake usage.

Ride safe

why would you use the rear brake only?  yes, you have more weight back there, but that doesn't change the laws of physics.  dn't be afraid to lay on that front brake.
