Wednesday, December 5, 2007 Girl, 7, shot 6 times saving mom
DETROIT -- A 7-year-old-girl is being hailed as an "angel from heaven" and a hero for jumping in front of an enraged gunman, who pumped six bullets into the child as she used her body as a shield to save her mother's life.
Alexis Goggins, a first-grader at Campbell Elementary School, is in stable condition at Children's Hospital in Detroit recovering from gunshot wounds to the eye, left temple, chin, cheek, chest and right arm.
"She is an angel from heaven," said Aisha Ford, a family friend for 15 years who also was caught up in the evening of terror.
The girl's mother, Selietha Parker, 30, was shot in the left side of her head and her bicep by a former boyfriend, who police said was trying to kill Parker. The gunman was disarmed by police and arrested at the scene of the shooting, a Detroit gas station. Police identified him as Calvin Tillie, 29, a four-time convicted felon whom Parker had dated for six months.
Parker, who was treated and released at Detroit Receiving Hospital, is now at her daughter's bedside. She declined to comment Tuesday.
The drama began to unfold just before midnight Saturday, when Parker called Ford and asked if she and Alexis could spend the night at Ford's home.
"She said she had no heat and they were very cold, and I said , sure I'll come and get you," Ford said.
Ford said she drove her burgundy 1998 Ford Expedition to Parker's home on Dwyer. She said as Parker and Alexis walked up to her vehicle she saw a man on the porch, who she assumed was a furnace repairman. She said Alexis, who walks with a limp, slipped momentarily on the icy sidewalk and as she helped the girl up, she saw the man and recognized him as Tillie. He was holding a gun.
Tillie ordered them into the vehicle, cursed at the women and angrily told Ford to drive him to Six Mile Road, she said.
"He looked like he was enraged and didn't care what he did. I knew if we went to Six Mile, he would kill us," Ford said. Instead, she told him she needed gas and drove to the Fast Stop Gas station in the 5000 block of East Seven Mile Road, a station that requires customers to pay the attendant inside.
"I figured if he got out to pump the gas, I was going to take off," Ford said.
Instead, Tillie gave her $10 and told her put in $5 worth of gas.
Ford said she dialed 911 on her cell phone as she walked into the station.
"The first operator clicked off and I dialed again and told that operator a guy with a gun was holding me hostage with a mother and baby and threatening to kill us. I told her the name of the gas station and then she said they didn't have a unit to send."
Ford said she paid for $5 of gas and slowly returned to the vehicle, stalling for time as she handed Tillie the change. She said she kept stopping and starting the pump, hoping the police would show up.
"I told him I needed more gas and took money out of my purse and went back into the station," she said. The attendant, Mohammad Alghazali, 30, said he noticed Ford was crying and she told him what was happening. He called 911 as he heard shots coming from the vehicle.
"It was very scary. She (Ford) was scared and screaming when the guy was shooting. I was scared, too. I was on the phone talking to the police when he started shooting," he said

I'm no fan of the nine for defense. It's not hard to figure out why LE agencies began getting rid of them years ago.....It simply isn't the best round for stopping a human. The last guy my department shot took 13 rounds before he was stopped.

no handgun is a good manstopper. not even if it begins with a 5.
Pop quiz "your handgun is used to fight your way toyour rifle" Who said it?
That said I am curious what rounds he was using. My guess is this ****bird was loaded with WWB , PMC or whatever else he could find cheap, I seriously doubt he spent the kind of money SXT or Hydrashocks cost. Finally from .22 to 155 howitzer, shooting something is only as effective as shot placement.
" eye, left temple, chin, cheek, chest and right arm. "
I GUARENTEE the eye and left temple were grazing shots or shrapnel as a .22 would be fatal in either. Cheek , chest (obviously not a CNS hit) and right arm are all not going to be fatal with immediate medical attention.
"My wife. I'm not fond of much that doesn't begin with a 4. "
Remember that cop in northern Wisconsin that shot 7 kids with his ar? He shot himself 3 times in the head with a .40 before he died. [sm=yikesomg.gif]

"Pop Quiz" answer: Clint Smith? I've always personally HATED that saying though.Nothing against him, just hate that particular saying. It all depends on the situation and the environment. If you carry concealed and are miles away from your house where your rifle is, it doesn't make much sense.Be proficient in the concealed handgun you carry and do your best for good shot placement. I believe that outside of wars, more people have died from .22's than any other caliber. A good hit with a .22 in an artery in the neck or in the eyeball is better than a grazing shot in the bicep with a larger caliber. That said, I usually carry a .45 95% of the time.
Balistically the 9mm is capable of inflicting enough damage to stop a threat. The key to any defense round is getting into a critical part of the body. When faced with a high stress situation you will only shoot approxiamately 30% (don't remember source of statistic) of your best practice day. I tell people that paper targets are the judge. I agree that they do not represent balistic statistics, wound channel damage, penetration, etc. but what they do tell you is what your chances are of actually hitting your target. If someone can't hit the target with a .45 but can nail it with a 9mm then the 9mm provides the higher probability of your survival. The other thing is that shooting is like golf or any other sport -skills decline as time increases between practice. Balistically the .40 or .45 does more damage than the 9mm - but if the bullet misses its target the balistics don't matter. This is also true for what defensive round you use SXT, DPX, Power Ball, Hydro-shok, etc.

I think a .45 makes the effective shot placement zone of the target larger that it is with a Nine.
Where a 6 inch center-mass hit would incapacitate with a 9MM, that same center-mass zone may be 10 inches with a 45.
Shot Placement is key, it's just a 45 gives more room for error, so to speak.
Velocity is not the end-all be-all. Consider the 223/5.56MM round --it is not considered an effective Deer cartridge, and is illegal in some juristictions to hunt with.
Some states permit handgun hunting, but require a minimum of 500 ft lbs energy to be legal (some also have minimum cartridge case length making the 45 acp ineligible).
The answer? Carry a gun you can shoot well, and practice, practice, practice. As for me? Make mine a 45 ACP please.

I carry a Kahr CW9 and I think I should replace it with a compact .45. The reason Iwent with the Kahr was because I asked a buddy of mine that isfederal marshell what he has for back up. He pulled a Kahr CW9 from his ankle holster and we went out and shot it. I picked mine up that day. Even thoughit fits my hand well and I make great groups on paper it is still just a 9mm. I have alot of family that areLE and I have heard plenty of horror stories about the 9 not doing the job.Plus now this gives me a reason to pick up a new toy.
