OK, I haven't seen anything in the forum reference the current value of Harleys so I thought I'd start this.
I've noticed while traveling around that all the dealers have more than the normal share of bikes on the floor. I've also noticed that all the dealers are in pretty new buildings including my own dealer who is opening up next Saturday in a huge building. Another thing I have noticed is that you don't spend $21,000 on a new ultra and keep it 2 years and get your money back anymore.
As of now it seems that dealers are giving wholesale for your bike and getting total retail on the new ones. Some dealers are still tacking on extras and jacking up the price. How long can this last before we start seeing discounted bikes like in the 70's and 80's?
In my area, anything that's one or two years old, still gets damn near MSRP of a new one. They typically do have some of add ons, which I'm guessing is why someone would buy a used one over a new one...

In my area, you'll save a little on a used one, particularly of you like the add-ons. Two big selling points seem to be the number of miles on it and if it hass the extended warranty. The way that I look at it is that if I decide I want to sell for any reason, Iwon't tke near the hit that I would on a new car (percentage wise). What the future holds...who knows? Personally, I'm more concerned about what the economy will do than a glut of bikes. I'm 56 and I'm at the beginning of the Baby Boomer age group...there's a lot more to come!
Hi, here in the UK, I walked into my local dealer 2 months ago, who has a very state of the art workshop and showroom. It was the coldest day of the year. I thought I might get a bargain. I liked the look of a Road King Classic Anniversary in Gunmetal Pearl. 240 genuine miles on the clock from new but the salesman wouldn't give in after 2 hours. I paid ÂŁ13,000 for it which was the asking price. I'm happy because it is a nice bike and loaded with extras. Over here you can still get what you paid for it after several years if you keep it good.

Between this and the surge in popularity from "American Chopper", "Biker Buildoff" and the like, I think we are at the beginning of a huge surge in bike sales...
The thing you have to look at is how much the stealer is making on a used bike, for instance, 2000 Road king classic with 9000 mile's, a guy was going to trade it in on a new one, now what do you think the dealer was going to give him in on trade, $14200[sm=wtf.gif], so the guy decide's to sell the bike for 14200 out right, a freind of mine went and looked at the bike and said it had darn near 4000 scoot's of acc. on it, but do you think the stealer would sell that bike for 14200, heck no, try 18000 for size, so around here your better off getting the bike before it goes to the stealer. So the way it appear's to me is the price's aren't going to bottom out anytime soon.

While the sales numbers may continue to increase for awhile, the Motor Company has bumped up production to the point they are pretty much ahead of demand. That's why most places have bikes at MSRP, and some areas are below it. Add in climbing interest rates, and an economy moving away from higher paying tech jobs to service jobs, and we might start seeing a downturn in sales, though it'll be awhile before the turn happens. Dealer offerred me $3500 (trade in) for a 2000 883 Sporty (less than 5K mi.). I sold it for $5500. Did NOT buy a bike from that dealer, and, will not in the future!!
