Default Help to Decode Vin and Any Info

Hi
I am new to this forum and am trying to decode the Vin for my bike and find out if there is anything special about this Shovel, other than it belonged to my partner who purchased it new and passed in Nov 07. We were in the process of a total rebuild and I will be getting measured for fit and paint tomorrow. I would like to keep it as stock as it was. I have some original chromed parts that he took off and planned to sell. How do I know the value???
Would someone help me out, Please? 2F68627H8 I got the 2F (FXS)and the (1978) I do not get the middle because there are 5 numbers.
Thanks so much,
Launie

2F - Model number FXS 1200
68627 - sequential number (
60000 and up: used between Jan 1, 1978 through 1980)

H - manufacture code (
used between 1970-1979)

model year - 8 - 1978

Series FXS Low Riders
First/Only Year [blockquote] Optional paint: Silver with Black tank panels and Red pin-striping and Black seripe and Red pinstriping on front fender [/blockquote] Electronic ignition Cast-iron valve guides (midyear) Updated valves with harder stems (midyear) Revised intake manifold and flat manifold O-rings (midyear)

That's about all I could find for you. As far as finding out if it's a special special , you could give Harley a call directly. Maybe the could help you out.

hope that helped a little

Pauly

Launie...a little more help for ya. Starting in 1975 MoCo changed the numbering system on lower crankcases. The new procedure uses the Julian date. The Julian Calendar uses all all 365 days of the year. 001= Jan 1; 365=December 31. Only exception would be 366 in Leap year

For example a 1975 FL which was produced on January 1, 1975 would appear as follows:

1 75 -001 001 (where 1 = model; 75 = year; 001 = Julian date; 001 = sequential unit produced that day)

And from my records I show vin numbersfor 2F series for 1978 as follows:

2F 10004 H8 (starting number) through 2F 79716 H8 (ending number). I also show 2F 94955 H8 through 2F 95215 H8.

From decoding lower case numbers you can tell which day your motor was produced and from looking at 2F series vin sequential numbers you can see if yours was an earlyor late build.
