can help this newbee
just a quick question for all you veteran part swappers,
and knwledgable wrenchers ...............
I want to change the front 19 inch mag on my 85 FXSB.
I want to go to a 21 inch 40 spoke rim.[8D]

my question is what all will fit this narrow front end and axle size?

( I assume ) it is the same front end as ALL? FX's and sporty's?

who knows of all the axle sixes i am reading about? 5/8? 3/4? 1 inch?

will a rim from a 97 FXSTC fit? be the same specs?( width and axle )

what the heck fits what???????.................. HELP[:@]

Spokes for FX and FXST are both 9 3/4". Rims sizefor both is a 2.15 x21. What is different are the hubs. Am also thinking that rotormay need to be spaced for brakes to clear spokes.

Thanx Rodney, and Panz4ever...... this helps me a little, I have this same question on several different posts here at hdforums, just was hoping to know more. that rim is on ebay right now and was wondering if it would fit before bidding. otherwise I wouldn't be in such a rush.

You can learn alot on this forum. You can also learn from reading aftermarket parts catalogs. IE; Custom Chrome, Drag Specialities, Paughco, Mid West Cycle, Dennis Kirk, V-Twin Manuf, J&P Cycle, etc.....They will always list what yearseachitem fit. I sometimes take one with me (usually J&P) when I go to swap meets. Granted it's no replacement for experience, but it'll get ya close!!

A good machinist can make anything work. He can make spacers to align the brakes and such.The MOST IMPORTANT thing you have to do when making a wheel swap is setting the end play for the wheel bearings. I can't stress enough how important this is.If you have a good independant shop, with a knowlegable mechanic, he can provide this service.

I never thought of checking years and changes in part mags? great idea !, and along with that I have a really fantastic machine shop, less than 15 miles from me. NOW i feel comfortable to go ahead and bid away. thank you all for your time and expertise !!!!
