Hey all, I just got my first Harley Davidson.....2002 V-ROD. It has 6800 miles and I paid $9620. It has V&H powershots w/o baffles(very loud) + V&H fuel map, corbin seat, machined front wheel, levers, grips, pegs, led taillamp, license relocation, new tires, base plate w/ mini sissy bar ect....Seems to run well and is very clean.

So, is there anything I should check out on it? This is bike #6, the other 5 were metric sportbikes.

Joel

I also got a spare front wheel, highway bars, night rod headlamp assembly, 2 sets of handle bars, the OE seat in the deal

Sounds like you made a good deal with all of those accessories. Congratulations.

Are you missing the end-caps on the grips? Can't really tell by the picture but if you are they're cheap (considering it's a Harley) and will provide a finished look to the grips.

Yes, the grip ends are missing for whatever reason. I've found the end caps, just havn't bought'em yet. So far I love this thing. I just got back from riding with a buddy who has a custom built old skool bobber. Thanks for the comments.

Good choice in bikes and it sounds like you got a great deal.  How do  you like it compared to the other bikes you've had?  Welcome to the forum, come on in and liven the place up!

It's a good looking 2002.  Congrats.

I can see in the picture that your IAT sensor is still on the back of the front cylinder.

You *may* still be able to take it to the dealer and have them do the relocation for it into the airbox and flash your ECM for the relocation.  It should be a free upgrade on the 2002's.  With the IAT sensor on the back jug, it can have issues with warm start-ups.

Other than that, congrats and enjoy.

Sorry for the delay, I kinda forgot. I checked my milage last tank and I got 37mpg. That was mixed backroads and highway. The light comes on just past a 1/4 of a tank and I put in 2.3 gallons to fill it. So how big is the tank and aprox how far can you go once the light comes on?

On another note I was looking under the bike and saw a suspecious looking item zip tied to the frame. It is the size of a small box of matches. Its a magnet in a plastic case. Any guess what this is and why it would be in that location or on the bike in general?

3.7 gallon tank with about 3.2~3.4 useable gallons, assuming it's a stock tank. Most of us pretty much ignore the gage. It's notoriously inaccurate. Use the trip odometer. At 100 miles start looking for a gas station. At 120 miles, have a gas station in sight. I managed 130+ miles once, all Interstate, and put in exactly 3 gallons. I forgot to set the trip odo once and the gas gage needle disapeared under the speedo. It took 3.2 gallons and I hadn't run out.

If the box and magnet is zip tied to a fuel line it was the previous owner testing the myth that it will give you better gas mileage. If it's not on or near a fuel line, feel free to develop your own theory.

(Thats not a sissybar. Someday I'll have to get my pics to fit this forum, or you can check mine out under the same screen name on 1130cc.com, usually in the VRSCD section.)

Not a sissy in the normal sense, but Harley calls it a mini sissy.

It was near the fuel overflow, so perhaps that was the deal. I took it off. Thanks for the info on the fuel milage.

Actually, this is a Green Light Trigger. http://www.greenlightstuff.com/ It's designed to fool those traffic lights for left turn signals into thinking that there is a bigger vehicle present so it activates the signal. I have used them with mixed results. I don't have one on the V-Rod though, they're primarily designed for bikes with more aluminum and plastic like Crotch Rockets.

Congratulations on your beautiful new ride! The mini sissy bar is the hottest thing one can add to a V-Rod IMHO. There is just something about it that sets the whole bike off just right!

Thanks for all the compliments. I am really enjoying this bike. I think I could ride it everyday and not get tired of it. My last fill up revealed 39 mpg....is this about average?

The main reason I got a Harley was a friend of mine had been letting me ride his spare. He was riding a dyna lowrider and I was riding his wife's sportster 1200. (after the fact she decided to get a smaller bike) Anyhow, at first I liked the sportser, then I didn't after riding the lowrider. Recently we went riding and I let him ride my vrod and I rode his lowrider. (this was his first ride on a vrod). Now, I don't like riding either of his bikes I would have never guessed, but I almost felt cramped on his lowrider compared to the vrod. My bike is so much smoother, more nimble and faster. I am very satisfied that this is the Harley I chose.

I get 33 at best, but that may be in part due to my heavy hand and no baffles.

Very nice looking bikes - fell in love with v-rods since I saw my first anodized one in 2003. They are still one of my favorite models. Like the front wheel - looks like a Gorby cut wheel or a similar pattern. Looks great on your bike!

Yes, I think it is a Gorby. I know instead of sending off the origional he bought a new one and sent it off. I have the stock one as well.
