This week isn't going as well as I hoped.  I wanted to go to a wider front tire on my 94 FXDWG.  I ordered a 3.25" X 21" 60 spoked wheel on ebay for $140.00, and a Metzeler ME880 120/70V-21 for $96.00 from Cycle Gear.  The rim showed up and I was surprised to see it was tubeless, the center of the rim was filled with a vulcanized rubber compound of some kind to seal the spokes.  I think sweet, I don't have to buy an tube.  Although, I will say I was a bit skeptical about a spoked wheel being tubeless but what the heck, I would give it a shot.  The tire arrives from Cycle Gear and I take the rim and tire to the local Cycle Gear store to be mounted and balanced.  I pick up my now completed wheel and take it home.  Later that evening I decide to put the wheel on the bike but I noticed it seemed low on air.  I fill the tire up with air and then take it around back and set the wheel in the pool and sure enough, air was bubbling out at 2 spokes.  So much for my confidence in tubeless spoked wheels.  Well, needless to say I wasn't to happy, for one I have a brand new leaky tubeless wheel and two, Cycle Gear apparently mounted the tire and didn't check for leaks before wasting the time to balance it and give it to their customer.  The vender for the wheel said I can ship it back to him and he will send me a new one.  My question for you all is this, should I send the wheel back and make another attempt at a tubeless spoked wheel or should I just put a tube in it like I was originally thinking I would need to do.  I just am not very confident in the tubless spoked wheel, especially with the heat here in Arizona.  I picture the rubber drying out and shrinking away from the metal.  Well I am open to any thoughts and opinions other then buying a mag wheel, it is out of my budget range at this time.

If I was you, I would put a tube into the tire. It's more safe for as you have seen that the air can go out of your tire for the rims.

I would like to see any pic of your new tire, as I want to put the same tire in my FXST. And if you let me ask, have you had to replace you fender or the stock one bolts?

I am going to go the tube route, the vender I got the wheel from is sending me one free of charge.  I don't have an answer about the fender yet, I am waiting till the new wheel and tire actually holds air before I take off the current wheel.  I will update the post once it is on and I have had a chance to try it out.  Thanks for the responses.

Smart move on going with a tube. A friend & I were riding down the 202 SanTan Fwy one night & his tubeless tire went flat in about 3 secs.
Luckily it was his rear tire & he was able to pull over to the side safely. The seal on the rim just came loose for some reason. I'll never go tubeless on a spoked rim.

Just giving an update on my front wheel swap.  I had a tube put in the ME880 120/70-21 tire and my "tubeless" spoked wheel.  I installed the wheel on the bike and was able to use the stock Wide Glide fender, there is about a 1/4" clearance at the closest areas.  I do like the looks of the bike with the wider wheel and tire.  I have only put about 10 miles on the bike with the new wheel but I am very pleased at the handling improvements so far.  I am currently doing some work to the bike so I don't have any pics with the new wheel yet.  When I get it on the road again I will take a few pics and post them.

What size tube did you use for the front wheel and where did you get it?

To be honest I don't remember the size of the tube.  The place I ordered the rim from said that I could send the rim back to them and they would send me a replacement or if I wanted to go the tube route they would send be a tube free of charge.  When I received the tube I took it and the wheel to the Cycle Gear store that originally mounted the tire, they said the tube was the right one and installed it and re-checked the balancing for me at no charge(because they missed the leak the first time around).

wow guys,
not to be off subject, but in 25+ years wrenching, NEVER  EVER heard of a tubeless spoked rim......   still shocked
what will people ever think about stopping at? that just don't sound safe or trouble free no matter how I look at it.
I love spoked rims, and will always keep a good tube protect spoke band in place WITH a good old fashioned TUBE.
can't wait to see your pics......

Yeah I was a bit surprised when I found out about tubless spoked wheels.  I was a bit skeptical to say the least, you figure with the 60 spoke wheel I purchased there would be 60 places to leak plus the valve stem.  Then to have 2 spokes leaking right from the start just confirmed my initial concerns.  I am sure there are guys and gals that have been running the tubless spoked wheels for sometime with no problems but I will stick with a tube.  I know the advantages of going tubless if you should pick up a nail or something, but I will only go tubless with a solid wheel.

OK, I finally took a few pics and I will try to post them on here.  I have a 180/55-18 on the back and then the 120/70-21 on the front.  I also converted the final drive to chain, I had a 1" belt and pulley on it but I decided to convert to chain when the belt wore out.  The chain is a bit noisier but a lot easier to replace and I have more gearing options.  I can now say that I am much happier with the bikes handling.  Before I went to the wider front tire it was hard to hold a straight line on the freeway.  With the taller bars and windscreen, the wind would tilt me back and forth slightly and with the skinny front tire, any tilt would cause the front end to move left or right.  Now it is study as a rock even one handed, the steering isn't as quick but I am ok with that.  I still get a bit of a wobble on high speed sweeping turns sometimes but I had that with the 90/90-21 wheel as well.  I am running an Avon on the back and the Metzeler on the front, I know you are not suppose to mix brands but it will be a few weeks before I can replace the Avon.
