Default FLHX Front Cowling Issues

Hello All,

I'l try to make this as short as possible.

1 year ago my radio system failed and the dealer had the bike for warranty repairs. When I got the bike back the cowling and headlight did the "dance" all the time and most notably at night when stopped behind another vehilce. The headlight "danced" on the vehicle ahead. Theservice managerput me off when I complained, until I started finding cowling mounting screws on my garage floor. A few wasted hours later I still have a loose cowl even after the bolts were replaced.

Longs story made short, I opened up the cowling the other night and found BOTH main cowling mounting brackets snapped off at the top. We have steel mounts, powder coated and clean with no visible damage anywhere on the bike and they are snapped clean.

The dealers NEW service manager, tells me they have 1 other documented case of this happening and will replace my mounts no questions asked.

Has anybody seen/heard/had this type of damage/part failure happen to them?

Thanks,

Frank

From what I've read on this forum it seems to be a common problem. Search on "Fairing Bracket" and you will probably find several posts.

Welcome to HDF. Did the service manager look at you with a blank look on his face when you mentioned a problem with the "cowling" or finding "cowling mounting screws" on the floor?

I ask because I have never heard the fairing referred to as a "cowling" nor have I heard of the fairing brackets referred to as "stanchions."

Perhaps a perusal of the Parts & Accessories catalog or Service Manual and learning more HD terminology would be helpful--it does help to speak the same language.

And otherwise perfectly good fairing brackets fracture at the top as you describe; it is a common problem that seems to defy any explanation as to causation. The silver-color, horizontal speaker brackets are also prone to break.

Thanks for the welcome Harleypingman

As for the calling out on the terms I used...I would guess your world only evolves around the point at which you stand. How Unfortunate for you!!

The word cowl as defined in by our friend Webster: the top portion of the front part of an automobile body to which are attached the windshield and instrument board (sound familiar at all...??)

So I guess if that doesn't work for ya, then I suggestthat you go park yourJIFFY STAND for a bit, get over yourself, and take another pill.

Have a nice day !!

voodoo, good luck using Webster's definitions on Harley Davidson parts. If you were to look up cowling in an HD Service Manual, for example, you wouldn't find it. So terminology is important and you seemed to be somewhat limited in your familiarity with the HD vocabulary--hence, my suggestion of the Parts & Accessories catalog, available on line at the HD website, as a way to become more familiar with HD-speak.

As for your pissy response, hope you get over whatever's bothering you.
