Funny thing, this happened several years before I went into the navy 35 years ago in 1973.  I did forget that it happened on the Forrestal, though.  I made 2 deployments to the Mediterrian on that ship in 1974 and 1975.

I recall some testing on the USS Eisenhower (CVN-69) with a C-130 and JATO (Jet Assist Take Off)pods.....A C-130 was fitted with JATO pods and launched off the angle-deck......Sometime around the mid-70's (I think)...saw the pics but wasn't serving then...

I saw this video in 1979 while I was in training. I have over 5K hours as a Navigator in C-130's. I have never felt so safe in any other aircraft that I have flown in, it always got us home. We used to routinely patrol with 2 engines shut down on "B" models to conserve fuel. It's a tough airplane, they were first produced in the late 50's if my memory serves me correctly.

the C-130 went into service in the mid 50's.  I have no idea what year that video was made, but it was around in the early-mid 70's.  I saw it before I went to the med in 1974.

So VAW-126 was on the JFK in the mid 80's?  they were our E-2 squadron on the Forrestal and CVW-17 in the mid 70's.

I remember a good friend telling me sometime in the late 1960's....they landed the U-2 Spyplane on a Carrier. It was so top secret that nearly everyone had to go below deck.

The C-130 on a carrier....WOW!! It really is a good cargo plane and it simply works quiet well. They tired to replace it....but couldn't find anything better.

The Air Force and possibly the Navy as well....are considering a Prop-Driven Attact Aircraft. The Air Force currently has the A-10...which is a fine airplane. But, it is somewhat limited though and costly maintenance.

They are considering bringing back the A-1 Skyraider or OV-10 Bronco or the Ranger. They have concluded that they could build about 15-20 propdriven aircraft for the price of one A-10. The Propdriven would require less training and could be landed on unimproved runways as well. It would be interesting if this really does indeed happen though. I have a relative that flew the Skyraider during the Vietnam War in the Sandy missions....and he has said that the Skyraider was exhausting to fly, but always did the job.

Yeah, the 'ol Seahawks were deployed on the Kennedy during the 80's.......makes me feel like an old bastard now that the Kennedy is going to be DECOMMED this year! Doubt that it will be turned into a "synthetic" reef off the Atlantic Coast.

Here's a question for all of the aircraft lovers.
In the video they show a 130 refueling a couple of planes, then the view changes to one of the side windows of a plane being refueled. What type plane is it?

Here's a couple of hints, its not a Navy plane and one variant (only one) of it is still considered the loudest plane ever made.

EVrider,
They can't make any more A-10's even if they wanted to unless they want to spend far more than building a new plane from scratch. When Fairchild Republic went out of business after they finished the A-10 production contract. They parked all the tools and assembly jigs out in the parking lot for a number of years. When the airport needed the space they were all cut up and sold for scrap. If they wanted to make more A-10's they would have to reengineer, design, and build all new tools and assembly jigs.

Both are great videos.  I wonder what year the JATO with Fat Albert at Miramar was?, I got to ride in Fat Albert in 97 at the Miramar Airshow.  Damn fumes comming back into the cargo bay with all that yanking and banking almost made me sick.  But the zero gravity at the top of the climbout was great.   20 years in and 2 of my 3 ships are decommed.   It seems like it was just yesterday

Great video,

I had heard of the C-130 F being able to utilize carrier ops but had never seen the video footage. I would imagine that it takes a toll on the airframe and is why it is not done, and or utilized as a viable carrier based asset. Not to mention the airframe would be limited to vertrep, as there is really no where to tie down the aircraft and still maintian operations on deck.

At any rate great post and cool video..

How would you like to be the maintainer that has to clean that soot of the side of the aircraft each time Fat Albert does a JATO display.

Glad I was an Air Crew and not a ground pounder "black shoe". Those were the days!!

BEST (?) of both worlds.
Stationed aboard JFK in 1971. Reported aboard May 27, 1971. I remember exactly, because that is the JFK's birthday, and mine. I was 19 that day, and it was 4. Even got to dance with the CO's wife at the JFK Birthday Party in Virginia Beach. Asked her on a dare, and she accepted. OH CHIT!!!     Had a ball.
Was fortunate enough to go on sea trials with it, saw flight ops and went to Gittmo.
After Nuc Power School, stationed aboard nuc sub Aspro, for about 5 yrs.
Like Conroskie said, if I told you anything about that, well, then, would have to kill ya.

C-130's - Awesome aircraft. Here's a sample of "angel fire"

Would that aircraft being refueled be a swept-wing F-84F Thunderstreak?

And the man win's a rubber cigar.
BTW there are only swept wing Thunderstreaks. The straight wing version was named the Thunderjet.
They were the "improved" version of the Thunderjet, similar to the Navy's improvement of the straight wing Panther and its swept wing follow on the Cougar.

So I'm sitting here on my "Bum" Googleing my old "hummer" Squadron, VAW-126 and I come across something I've obviously missed out on. I "lurk" around on this forum constantly and never saw these posts.

I served in VAW-126 Aboard the USS John F Kennedy in the mid 80's. I was a "green" Aviation Electronics Tech fresh out of A school. Later in the mid 90's I went back to that squadron as the Chief and actually over-saw the Avionics shop. What a carreer oppurtunity I had. It was great! I'd only change a few things on my part if I had a chance to do it again.

Today I cruise around on an 04 dressed out Fatboy. I love the freedom but miss everything else.

Nice to see some other "Goats"/ Vets on the forum.

I'd always heard of the C-130 landings but never saw them.

Thanks for the video!
