View Full Version : Florida Forum rider goes down 5/29 UPDATE

I was urged to start a new thread about a fellow rider that went down on our ride last Saturday as a place to give updates on his condition and provide information for any one who wants to help in any way.

Last weekend the Florida Crew of HDForums planned a ride to meet up for the annual Leesburg Bikefest for those who could get away. The "Southern Division" met up in Moore Haven and I had asked a non forum member, Bob, to ride along with us, because he wanted to attend the event. He rode up to north of Haines City with us where we met up with the central and western divisions for breakfast. Bob ate with us and heard us talking of meeting at another member's site before heading to bike fest. Bob decided to skip that and head on up by himself to meet the friends he was to ride back with. The details are still sketchy of what actually happened, but he ran into the back of a vehicle and is seriously hurt.

He is presently in ICU at Lakeland Regional Medical Center with a head injury (not as bad as first thought, but still serious), broken ribs (fluid on the lungs is #1 priority now), broken leg (had surgery today and it went well), broken shoulder, and multiple lacerations. He has to be sedated and has a ventilator. Once he is awakened I will go visit him personally.

He has 2 daughters and their mother up there with him. Any one wanting to send an encouragement of some kind can send it to.

Thanks to all my Forum friends.

Very, very sorry to hear about Bob. Very best wishes to he and his family and that he attains a complete recovery from his injuries.

I am relieved though to hear it wasn't any of you "regular" Fla Crew though.

Mike, thanks for the post, it has been on all our minds since findig out the news when you guys rode into Mount Dora. After hearing about Bob and seeing the lady that went down on 44, it really puts us all in touch with the importance of safe riding and that thegroup ride makes us all more visable. Thanks for the post and let us know how we can help. Our hearts and prayers all all with Bob and his family.

Can only echo what everyone has said. Bob is in our prayers and will send a card. Also would like to try and make the visit with you if it's not to much for Bob and family to handle. Kimbo is right about being more visible when you ride with a crew. Safety FIRST and LAST

Maybe once he is resting comfortably in his own room we could get a group ride together to go show him our support.
I know if that was me it would make me feel a little better knowing how much everyone cared.

Yeah Dale it helps more than you could imagine. I've been in Bob's place and can tell you that just the thought that people from all over are wishing you well is a great momentum builder when you finally realize that your hurt bad and it sinks in. The support of friends you haven't met yet is like another crutch to help you back up.ORIGINAL: 1of2

Their was another post on another thread on how we might help Bob and his family and I suggested we move it over here. Here is my suggestion.

Dave, good idea but let's move it to the other post. Not sure how a ride can pull in donations, but if you have some ideas, let's hear them. I would be glad to make my own donation and take a copy of the post to the local HD dealer and other local bike shops and ask for donations. Post it on the other post and lets see what we get. Thanks for your concern and the idea

in situation like this the family needs support of us friends. we all come from different locations of this great state. here is a suggestion. we set up an acount or a person (mike) to accept donations nationwide for anyone who reads this. paypal seems to be the easist or just sending checks or money orders or whatever. or we have a bob ride as we are already suggesting and have a donation pot available there at the hospital.somethin like that. just some idea to throw out there.

BOB REPORT:

For the last couple of days Bob is holding his own with no improvement and no regression either. So as Rebel says "Let's take that as the cup being half full instead of half empty." He continues to be on a ven and sedated.

I talked to Buddy, close friend of Bob, who was going in to the hospital as I spoke to him on the phone. He informed the family of the concern and support of the Forum members and they were appreciative. Their needs are currently being met, for they have family in the area, so they are not having the expense of motels. Buddy relayed the message that if there are any needs not being met to let us know.

Thanks again on behalf of the Elliotts

I haven't met Bob or any of the Florida forum members, but as a GA HH rider who just had a minor accident a week ago, I wanted to send my thoughts and prayers to Bob and his family.
I had riders I have never met posting well wishes within minutes of my accident and I can't express how overwhelming the support of other riders made me feel.
If there is anything his family needs, please let all his fellow riders know so we can help inany way we can.
May your recovery be swift and my God bless you and your family.

The marjority of the human race go through their life with blinders on. Only a select few slow down to smell the roses. There is only a select few who take the time to notice others. I have seen all walks of life. There is one community I have noticed who cares more for others. I never seen a true biker pass another biker in need. I have never heard of a biker turning down another biker in need. The motorcycle community has shown me true friendship and true love. I am PROUD to call myself a biker (motorcyclist). When one of us is in need, we give. When one of us is hurt, we help. When one of us is tired, we open our homes and lend our bed. Here at HDF we have some of the best bikers the world has to offer. I have never met a member I did not like. We ride together, we laugh together, we cry together, and we live together. HDF has been, and always will be, myfamily. All of you are my brothers and sisters. I would open my home and heart to each one of you as I know you would do the same for me. So Mike, you let Bob and his family know their family at HDF cares and loves them. I know we will rise to the needs of Bob and his family. God Bless!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BOB UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2003FLHP1, Yes!! A support ride will be in order once he is awakened. We can all get together and maybe time it with the shirt hand out with Walt.

I talked to Buddy again a few minutes ago and this is what he had to say.

Bob is still sedated and on a breathing tube. He has not regained full conscienceness since the accident. Of course the full extent of the head injury will not be known until he regains conscienceness. Apparently he was having high fever due to infection in his lung from the trauma and he had high blood pressure. The fever and the blood pressure is down so that is good news. They were also able to decrease the oxygen level in his vent, so there is improvement there also. Right now improvements are coming in small steps and we can be thankful for all we see. We must continue to pray for him and the family.

Buddy informed me that thus far all the needs of the family are being met and Bob's employer is also helping out. He will keep me posted of any thing needed and all updates of Bob's condition.

I sent Buddy a link to this thread so he can read it and we may even have us new member of the Florida Crew.

Thanks to all!!!!! Keep Praying!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BOB UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob is still improving step by step. Doctors have removed vent and installed trache (Sleepman can probably explain this better) and have installed feeding tube in his side. Doctors were concerned how he would handle the time from the changeover from the vent to the trache, but said all went amazingly well. He is now down to receiving 40% oxygen through the trache. Docs want to slowly start waking him and are already seeing physical response to touch by others. Another good sign!

All of these things are good news and bring encouragement to friends and family although there is still a long ways to go.

Thanks for all your prayers and encouragement on behalf of the Elliott family.

Thanks for the update. Maybe it won't be too long before we can make a trip to see him. The trach leaves them with more options in managing his respiratory issues. They can put him on the vent if needed, but can also easily plug the trach when they bring him out of sedation.

Talked to Buddy for the second time today just a few minutes ago. Here is some more news. Bob is only on 1/3 of the sedation meds and when is spoken to by his daughters he opens his eyes. His temp has risen some and the doctors are a little concerned. But overall the last couple of days things are looking better.

His employer is planning a benefit BBQ for him and wanted me to let the word out. No date has been set yet, but as soon as I get it, I will let you guys and gals know. For those that can get away, I am sure it would be encouraging to the family.

Another small step today.

Bob is regaining conscienceness. He was looking around the room today and seemed agitated. His daughter asked if he knew what happened and he shook his head no. She explained it to him and he seemed to calm down. She thinks he is comprehending some of what is going on, but can't respond with hand squeeze which docs think is normal after the long unconscience state. Still a long ways to go, but those small steps are still taking place.

No set plans on the benefit BBQ yet,

Thanks again friends.

Just a quick update. Will get more info this evening.

Saturday was a rough day for Bob. Yesterday was pretty good. He was wanting to know where his "stuff" was. I took that to mean his bike. Docs are talking about placing a valve where his trach is so he can talk with his daughters so things are still looking good. He is more aware at times and seems to be off and on of his awareness. Keep up the prayers.

Thanks again.

They'll be good days and bad days as he recovers. But it's very good that they're working with his trach so that he can talk. Eventually that'll just be a faded scar.

Still saying prayers for Bob and his family.

Another small step today.

Bob is a little more aware and starting to communicate a little more. His daughter asked if he wanted to watch Seinfeld on tv and he scowled and shook his head no. (He hates Seinfeld). Then she asked if he wanted to watch Home Improvement and he smiled and shook his head yes. He is attempting to speak, but with the trach of course having difficulty. He still seems to be in and out, but when he is awake there is a little more awareness of what is going on. His daughter is exhausted and totally drained so she needs a prayer of extra strength.

Good news keeps coming in small steps, but thankful for everyone of them.

Bikerchick,
That is great.

Here is some more info that was asked for.

Bob's daughter's that have been at the hospital with him are Melanie and Angie. They need our prayers and encouragement also.

Ok, I talked to Buddy a little while ago and a few more small steps are still being taken. A little more awareness and attempts at communication. Docs are talking of soon wanting to move him out of ICU into a trauma unit. So still no flowers only cards. Buddy said that when he was at the hospital he noticed some cards were hanging on the wall. They are sure encouragement for the daughters.

Thanks again!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Bob update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talked to Buddy today whom was visiting Bob at the Hospital. He said Bob is still improving. Earlier in the week they did a swallow test on him and he did well so he is on a liquid diet. The placed something in his trach so he can talk and he talked to his mom on the phone today. He is still having problems with short term memory like asking the same questions a few minutes apart. He is in good spirits and joking around with Buddy. He can recall events with Buddy and discuss them intelligently. Bob works at a Napa store and today just blurted out to Buddy "Did you know that an oxygen sensor that mounts in front of the catalytic converter on a Toyota cost $240.00."

Bob is still unable to walk or even move around on the bed by himself and still has a long way to go with his brain injury, but he is improving and his daughters are encouraged to see the improvement and cards from all over.

Keep it up People!!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, all,

I'm from Arizona and ride with 1of2's brother (2of2), I just saw this thread, and wanted to send out my prayers from AZ! We stopped on our ride last Saturday to help a downed rider. That is never fun!

I used to work in a rehab facility, and Bob will have a long road ahead of him, including at least 3 hours of Physical therapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy a day. I have seen many people in similar situations make miraculous recoveries.

Keep up the prayers, and I too, will look forward to updates!

We have been witnesses to a miracle.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; I&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; am so excited I can hardly type this post.

I just got off the phone with Bob.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; He gets to go home next&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; Thursday.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; He says he remembers meeting Rebel, Jason, and I at the BP, and the others at 70 and 27 and eating breakfast at Cracker Barrell and then leaving from there by himself because we were going to Mt. Dora first. I think that is remarkable.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; But remembers nothing after that.

I told him about this thread and he said he knows because of all the cards he received.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; He said he&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; even received a card from some people in Ga. with a picture (See this Bikerchick and Hellions).

Thanks to all.

Unfortunately I've not been keeping up with the forum lately so I didn't see this thread until Mike mentioned it to me.&nbsp\\; Having recently been in an accident on my UC I can sympathize with Bob to a small extent but fortunately I was only bruised up.&nbsp\\; I'm glad to hear that Bob is doing so well and send my best wishes for a full recovery.
