I think that the axle size is different. The wheel I am running is using a 1 inch axle and I think that the stock axle for my 78 was smaller (7/8 maybe). When I got the bike it had a complete 79 swingarn and brake system on it, then I put on a  weld on hardtail. I have heard that this was a common swap,  to replace the whole swingarm and everything with a updated unit but being fairley new to these bikes hard to say for sure.
