I own a '90 FXR (1340 S&S) and recently threw the drive belt off. My question is this.....How much trouble can a weekend wrencher get into replacing the belt, the mechanics manual makes it sound fairly complicated.

Thanks for your time, your advice will be greatly appreciated,

It's not hard to do, just takes patience, cause you need to take the primary completely off and the swing arm pivot.  neither hard to do but they do take a little time.

Thank you for the advice. I have a mechanic friend who told me the same thing, but the last time he suggested NOS....I ended up replacing an engine. Thank you again.

It's not a difficult job. No special tools are needed, but I wouldn't even try this without an air compressor and 1/2 drive impact gun. The hardest part is removing the compensator nut, I think it's a 2" nut. And don't forget, the clutch hub and belt pulley are reverse threads.

go to my site & click on 1996-2001 swing arm replacement > Installation > than read.  It tells & shows it all.  Stop when you get the pivot shaft driven flush with the left side of the swing arm, remove one shock, place belt on it, replace shock, replace all that you just took off, clean up than ride.  Easy ~ takes me around an hour to take off and more to put together.
