Hello,

I have recently purchased a DPMS LR308 and now need a nice optic to put on top of it.  After the gun purchase, I am left with limited funds (so a Leupold M4 is out of the question).  I would like to spend under $400.  The main features that I'm looking for in a (tactical) scope are, target turents and mill dot recticle with at least a 40mm objective lense and side focus would be nice.  There are a few scopes that I have been looking at and was wondering if any of you guys have any imput on the subject or other scopes to suggest.  Here are the scopes I have in mind...............

Millett TRS-1
Bushnell Elite 3200
Tasco Super Sniper
Nikon Monarch

With a .308 cal rifle the recoil will be an issue of the scope holding zero.  I'm looking forward to hear what you guys have to say.  If any of you guys have a nice  used tactical scope that you want to sell, send me an IM and maybe we can work something out.  Thanks, in advance for any input you can give.

I don't know about $400 but if you look for a used Leupold on benchrest.com,go go varmint and others you can find a vari x3 in the $400 to $500 range.

Hi Meat Head,

I spent 29 years in the Weapons and Tactical field, so I have seen or owned a scope or 2.....lol.....and of your list you cannot go wrong with the Millett, I have 3, or the Super Sniper, I have 2.......... Both will serve well as far as clarity, ruggedness, and zero-ability. The Super Sniper is a fixed 10X, is that what you are looking for? You can get the Millett in a 4-16X, which does give a little more versatility.

I don't own any hunting rifles as I use one of my tactical rifles in the field as well....it is great PRACTICAL practice of that particular firearm, so choose the scope that will serve the purposes of which you intend to use your great, accurate DPMS.

I'm probably the WRONG guy to reply to this but here's my 0.02:

You just spend close to $1000 on your rifle and now you want to compromise the entire weapon system by putting sub-standard optics on it?  Your rifle is only as good as the optics (and the mounts it sits in).

I'd forget the Super Sniper.  Although Ive heard decent things about it, youll be stuck with fixed 10X and that's a limiting factor.  The Nikon would probably be ok.  Forget the Millet.  I'm not betting my life on a $400 scope.

The minimum I'd be looking for is a used Leupold.  Find you a VariX 4.5 - 14 with target turrets and side focus somewhere for $600 - $700.  4.5X is workable for closer ranges and 14X will get you to 1000yds if you have that available to you.  Youll be happier in the long run and will be able to take full advantage of the nice rifle you just bought.

As for 308 recoil being a factor in holding zero.  308 doesnt recoil that much and a semi-auto recoils less than a bolt gun.  Holding zero will NOT be an issue with any sort of QUALITY optics.

Good luck.  PM me if you have other questions.  I have a 'little' experience in this arena.

of the choices you have listed the super sniper is the only one that i would buy. if you see that you really are into this kind of thing save up for some 50 cal rings and get a nightforce scope.

what i shoot. remington700 LTR with accuracy international chasis, badger 50 cal rings and leupold long range target scope. 5 and 10 rnd magazines. cold zero at 300 yds...

I have a Busnell elite 3200 on my son's 7mm Rem Mag, and I have the Nikon Monarch on my 270wsm.  Both are very good optics imo.  The nikon is a bit brighter but both suit us for our annual deer hunting trips.  I don't think we put moer than 25 rounds in each gun annually.
