ORIGINAL: Tony P ... my wife who works with a woman who's husband just bought his first bike, a Honda 1100. My wife conferences me in on the phone line to try to explain to her why her husband can't find nuetral and why the bike bogs down when launching (He's apparently starting in 2nd gear or higher). He did take the course to get his motorcycle license, which makes me wonder... Man, I hope I never meet this guy out on the road... Scary.... Well, mr. expert rider, a better response would've been to offer to meet the guy and determine what the problem is. But I guess a seasoned, expert rider like you has little time to help others, since everybody else is so far below your skill level that they'll never catch up. You're right. I should meet with him. Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways. I will call his wife this afternoon and set it up. Glad you're going to help him. Sorry for the harsh reply above- I read your post before I had my coffee this morning I deserved it. I will probaly know today if he takes me up on my belated offer.

Hmmmmm, bike bogs down when taking off. Maybe he hadn't released the parking brake?

I don't think starting out on a street bike is a bad idea as long as it fits the rider . Still not sure what brand had to do with it . I just wish these people would ask for help BEFORE they get hurt

Gotta start somewhere I satrted out on an Honda XR 75 when I was 8. Still, 12 bikes later never consider myself an expert rider. When you get to the point you are not scared and alert on a bike is the time to park the thing. Between first and second, I push down on the heel shift with my hand to put it in neutral. Works every time. "Life is Hard, It's even harder when you're stupid"

While it's not impossible to start out on a big bike, I think common sense would dictate that it's a lot easier to start with something smaller when you have no experience at all. A mistake that will put you down on a big heavy bike might be able to be corrected in time on something smaller and lighter. Plus it's cheaper when you do dump it, and doesn't hurt as much to have a smaller bike laying on top of you. I'm glad you offered to help this guy out. A friend of mine just started riding last year on a 350 and is thinking about buying a Harley within the next year or two. He always sits on mine when he's in my garage, and as much as I sometimes feel like offering to let him take a ride on it, I've seen him ride, and I don't think he's ready to step up yet. He doesn't ride his bike enough to get the practice he needs. He had to get a new permit this year because he never took the test last year. I keep telling him to sign up for the MSF course, but he never does. If he goes ahead and gets a Harley I'm afraid there's trouble in his future.

My first 2 wheel machine was an El Tigre mini bike from JC Penney. 5HP Techumseh, and it even had shocks. That was when i was 6 years old.
