He did take the course to get his motorcycle license, which makes me wonder... Man, I hope I never meet this guy out on the road... Scary.... So your wife was talking to mine today?

I wish this was nothing more than a story, but it's true. When I went to the MSF, we had one guy fall over trying to ride between the cones... and he passed! Beware, the rookies are coming to a road near you...

Just tell him he's gotta pull in the blade looking thingy on the handle thingy that you twist with your hand and push down on the L shaped thingy next to his foot. Maybe he'll understand that!

For the life of me, I cannot understand how ANYONE would think it's a good idea to go out a buy a street bike when they haven't ever ridden before or have very limited time on a bike.... No wonder the fatality rates are so high. If people like this can't figure out how to shift, what makes them think they are prepared for a panic stop or a swerve or when they hit something slick??? A street bike is NOT the kind of bike to find out what it's like to kiss the ground. The Honda dealer should have thrown in a CRF70 for the guy to learn on....

We were all new riders at one time or another; however 1100 cc bike may be a bit much as a starter bike. There have been several previous posts asking if a Sportster or a Dyna is too big to use as a first bike. The replies seem to range from “No, just practice in an empty lot” to “Buy a 250cc bike and learn to ride a smaller bike first.” I am surprised that the guy was having problems in finding neutral after taking a riders course, maybe the bike has some clutch adjustment problems. Just because the bike is new dosen't mean that the adjustment is set correctly. Arcane

Dang you guys are harsh. Even you guys made dumb azz mistakes when you started out. - I know I did. I do agree however that one should start out small and work their way up. This guy will probably regret making such a large investment if happens to dump it while he is still learning. Just my 0.2

Just tell him it's normal to get the RPMs above 5,000 before dumping the clutch. Won't have to worry about him too long.

I took it to the HS parking lot and practiced, so I wouldn't kill myself and embarrass my family tree. I wanted all my mistakes to be worked out before I endangered myself and others. And you're right, I still made a few mistakes, but I kept them at a minimum - Also, as you can see, I didn't buy too much bike. I hope this guy makes it...

Still, everyone does have to start somewhere and hopefully the only thing that maybe gets hurt is his pride.

My first bike was a 19 year old Shadow 750. I was 40 something. Someone from work had to both test ride it and ride it home for me. I bought a book on how to ride, started on the center stand, went around the block, went around the city, and then down the road. Almost killed myself 2 hours later and had to ride it home after the crash with my elbow trobbing and could barely squeeze the clutch. Might not have gotten up if it weren't for the FF helmet. While I'll admit that buying a powerful bike for your first bike is a lousy idea, it's not the power that kills you, it's the sudden stop when you hit the road.

While I'll admit that buying a powerful bike for your first bike is a lousy idea, it's not the power that kills you, it's the sudden stop when you hit the road. I'll admit my first bike was an '06 Ultra. Nothing like a good challenge to get your blood flowing! My wife (who has ridden for 40 years) drove it home from the dealer and then we went to the high school parking lot where she taught me how to ride. For the next couple months I only rode around on residential streets during the daytime. During this time I decided it was best to take the MSF course, which I did. Then came the Ride Like A pro video and more parking lot practice. If you approach it knowing your not ready to venture into traffic or make expert manuevers, then it really doesn't matter what bike you learn on. One thing learning on a Ultra will teach you fast is to be completely balanced when you stop...it has a way of telling you when she isn't. The weight makes learning to corner harder, but it just took a little longer to master than with a smaller bike. I think the bike you are using is secondary to the mental approach you use in learning, people can be stupid on anything.

I bougth my fist bika at age 17, it was a vtx 600, wannted the harly, but could not afford it then, had the new bike delivered to the house, learned to ride it in the parking lots, although I rode dirt bike all of my childhood, made several mistakes, spent 1000s of dollars repairing it, no telling how many set of blinkers i want through, but finally managed to get road worthy, rode that bike for about two years traded it off and got a bigger bike, what a mistake, but anyway, the bike was an 1982 cb900f supersport with countless upgrades, scared myself sh1tless on it more times than I could count, finally got out of riding for the last eight or ten years, could finally admit I was responseable, and bought my fist Harley, I rode it home from the dealership, about 110 miles away, but stayed on the back roads, took some of the curvest rodes home just to get back in touch, but I am sure many here will agree with me when I say that no matter how long I ride I am continueing to learn. What scares me more is all the young teenage cagers out there for the first time and still learning after that,, lots more of them to avoid.

But I guess a seasoned, expert rider like you has little time to help others, since everybody else is so far below your skill level that they'll never catch up.

I started out on a Cushman scooter at age 11, running around in the sand dunes. Learned a lot from that. Worked my way up thru small to large bikes. Built a '56 pan chopper after I got out of the Army in '70. Now that one really taught me some lessons. It's beyond my belief that someone would get a 700 lb bike for their first ride. A beater 250cc dirt bike would be my first choice for a training bike. I wish him more than luck!
