what is the difference in the 1999 and down wheels vs the 2000 and up ones? can the older wheel be used on the newer bikes? I have an 03 wideglide and am looking for a front wheel (21" 60 spoke) and can find em all day reasonably priced for 99 and earlier but for the late model bikes the price takes a huge jump. any info would be appreciated.

in 2000 hd started using a double sealed ball bearing and in the '99 and down they used a timken tapered roller i believe.  the older bearings you are suppose to service and repack them every 10,000 mi as with the new ones they are suppose to last for 100,000 mi.  i don't know if anyone gets that out of them before they replace i only have 25k on mine.
I don't know if you can install the newer sealed bearings in the older rims but I have seen a few threads here discussing it and you can probably find out by searching the net.

You should try to find info about the axle sizes of your bike and the previous to 1999. If the axle size is the same, you can get a 99 and down wheel with hub and if you don't mind to have the timken bearings, you can swap the wheel, but I would try to get a 2000-later wheel, because as it should be more expensive, you won't have to do the maintenance in the bearings.
