I have a '64 pan that I built and have been riding for 23yrs. I converted it over to 12V when I built it. The Accel solid state regulator took a crap, so I went to my local HD dealer and bought a 3 wire regulator that has a plug-in. My question is....since the Accel reg. wires were green, red, brown, in that order top to bottom, is it safe to assume that the Harley unit wires correspond to the same? The Harley unit wires are all 3 black. I know that the middle wire is the power from battery just like the Accel, it's the other two that I question. thanks in advance, Kevin

I am no electrical guru but got to looking at electrical diagram for shovel through 84. The pics show two black wires that go to the stator and one red that go to the battery. And checked my 76 FLH and it is wired that way as well. Guess my question is if you can use a voltage regulator set up for a stator on a pan set up for a generator.

yes you can use a stator type regulator for a pan or any other bike as long as it's 12V as I've said mine is converted to. It's voltage in and regulated voltage out just like a points style regulator. My question is : is it safe to assume the 2 wires that go to the stator on my new Harley dealer purchased 12V regulator correspond exactly to the aftermarket Accel regulator wires. Yes, the one is power, however the other two which had a plug connecter are a 50/50 guess if they are the same as the Accel or are switched comming out of the HD unit.
