hey guys... I've got an UGLY, messy leak comeing from my rear rocker box cover so I'm about to pull it and change out the gaskets (yes, I'm going to both if I'mgonna do the one).

my question, being new to the game, are there any surprises I should expect? anything to watch out for etc... ? it's a '72, and she usually runs real well, but the leak started up after getting side swiped by a car last week.... idiot! anyways, I do have the manual and have read through the whole section, but just thought I'd pick the brains of some real folk before I get my hands dirty...

that looks like the front head and it is missing the rocker shaft end plug, at any rate to remove the rocker boxes you have to remove the heads (if they are original and stud mounted) if they are bolt mounted you might be able to get the front one off, but not the rear.

Welcome to the HDForum ink slinger, Thats an interesting user name!
have you tried and given  the rocker bolts a tighten?
I had a leaking rocker box and the bolts were so loose when the engine was running the box was wiggling on the head all I needed to to was put a wrench on the thing and tighten it up.
have you checked that its not the push rod tubes or oil line seals?
oil can be sneaky and look like it's coming from one place when actually its leaking in another.
Please replace the rocker end bolts and seals with something OEM.
when you do pull your heads if you don't already know, determine if you have solid or hydraulic lifters and adjust accordingly.
How long has it been since the top end has been off?
Thinking you may want to have the valve guides checked.
rings?
base gaskets?
good luck, keep us posted on your progress.

Rod's right. I'm in the middle of a rebuild and noticed It didn't take much to take off the rocker covers. Caps were snug tight. Before tearin down check tightness of caps and the sneaky crossover oil line between the covers. Other than that take the tank(s) off and look for any interference from removing the heads. Remember if your goin that far check and replace everything you can.
