View Full Version : Throttle Cable binding - 07 Deluxe

I have a 2007 Deluxe with stock grips and cables.
I took off my throttle grip to remove a burr on the grip that I could feel when I tightened the poor man's cruise control a little. I read through all the posts about adjustment and setup the cables for no slack and a great feel.
When I turned to full left all was great, but at full right, the throttle bound and slowly returned to idle, sometimes stuck.

I loosened the idle cable until it was free and now there is slack when straight. I cannot find an adjustment that gives me snap back at full right and little slack when forward. I checked the cable routing to the pictures on HD website and went through the adjustment procedure 10 times, but still binds at full right when the slack is gone. Only at FULL right, at mostly right it is OK. The cables do get pushed against the brake line and tree at full right.

Do I need to have snap back at full right? Does anyone else notoce this? Am I expecting too little slack?

Full right turn is worst case for the throttle. If it's going to stick, that's where it'll do it. I adjust the idle cable so the throttle just snaps back with the bars full right and then turn the nut a couple more flats. Free play is what it is with the bars straight. If you check the free play on new bikes at the dealer or on a rental, they usually have a whole bunch, much more than I like. You don't want the throttle sticking when you're doing a tight right turn, so I would suggest you adjust so the throttle snaps closed at full right turn. Make sure you lube the cables every service, it helps.

I had the same problem changing the bars out on my RK. My solution was to go into the headlight nacelle and zipstrap the throttle and return cables in a smooth loop to the headlight wiring. End of problem for me.
On your Deluxe, do the cables route somewhere you can hide a zipstrap?

Many thanks for the reply. I guessed that I would never turn the bike to the right stop when riding, but on second thought, making a walking tight right turn would be a nasty time to have it stick...

I noticed that the cables and grip and bars have no sign of lube anywhere. The bike is almost 1 year old with 2.5K miles. It has been to the dealer for the 1K service. How much lube should there be? Should I be able to see any signs of it? Maybe a lack of lube is making the throttle bind sooner at the right stop?
I am going to get some DRI cable lube and slide and check the difference.

There are a few places to zip tie it I will try that too. It seems that the cables really push against the tree during the last 3" of right turn, like the cables are too long at that position. Thanks for the advice.
