Generator Gear
I just got a new Generator, and regulator in the hopes of curing my charging issue. I had the old genny check at a local shop and was told it was done. I also picked up a new 14 tooth generatror gear . Now the issue is that the old gear fit snug on the shaft almost like a press fit like i said just snug then put on the big washer then lock washer and lock nut the gear hasno back and forth movement at all. The new gear i bought slips on and when i put on the big washer and tighten it down the gear moves back and forth on the shaft. I do know the gear is a biker chioce brand made over seas and I understand that the tolernece are not always that close to the original part. Which gear should I use the loose one or the tight one? I guess it seemed to me that the gear should have no movement at all, is that correct?
Thanks T-Ron |
RE: Generator Gear
Correct. in fact, you sometimes need a puller to remove the gear. It should be a snug slip fit onto the shaft.
So use the gear that fits the tightest. You do not want a loose gear working back and forth on the shaft. Not only will that (questionably hard) aftermarket gear wear further, the shaft will as well.........pg |
