hey all,, I have a 98 fatboy with a new makuni ( about 350 miles ago) carb. I noticed yesterday and today it seemed a little sluggish when cranking on the throttle. like a hesitation. it never did this before. tonight I was riding home and it coughed and died. while costing I let the clutch out and it fired right up. it stumbled once more on the way home. I have 105 miles on this tank of fuel. poped the caps and could see fuel. do ya all think this could be starving because of a dirty filter in the tank? I have a external filter too. it does have a aftermarket manual petcock. any help would be great as I have a 600 mile trip planed to rolling thunder.

Just a shot but check you fuel line routing. Make sue you're not getting a vapor lock from line touching a jug.

Like outlaw said, check routing for possible heat soak,"vapor lock" check for a kinked line. by all means check ALL fuel filters and pet cock flow.( get a can , turn on the fuel flow and watch.... should flow smooth fast and steady!) if not a problem there, could have gotten an air leak, at manifold or since a new carb was fitted, possibly just came loose.( you mentioned missfire? ) what mod and coil do you have? may be time to update ignition ? start there and give us all an update, and we'll go from there. good luck we all been there.

85fxsb, I have a crane hi-4 and a reletivly new crane coil and plug wires. I pulled the petcock screen it was a little dirty not bad though also pulled the inline filter and left it off. I noticed I had a little air pocket with the glass inline filter do to routing. I re routed the line between the jugs so as the petcock is the highest point. with the inline filter it was the high point. I also put a piece of protective tubing in case it hits the jug. Now I need some fuel and no rain! anybody got other suggestions I am listening.

Have an 85 FXEF and the same problem; solved by cleaning the vent line comming out the bottem of the right tank. You'll need a fine piece of wire to do this. Try and find some safety wire to do this. It won't break-off. The other end of the vent is inside the right fuel neck.
