Does anyone have a recomendation on a compact 1911? Something around a 3.5". I have a full size Taurus 1911 and it is sweet., but I don't believe Taurus makes a compact. I love the Springfield Loaded ultra compact but I understand these run about a grand. Was hoping to stay below $600.00. Might be wishing for to much.

I have a Colt Defender in that size that I like real well.  If I was doing it again I would get a Kimber Ultra just because all my other 1911's are Kimber, but the Colt is near as good.

If you are going to get a quality 1911 you might have to up your price a little, or go with used.  I think the cheapest Kimber Ultra you can get is about 750 to 800 and the Colt is near the same.

There are cheaper out there, but you will probably get what you pay for.

Just got back from Cabelas and put my hands on the Colt Defender and the Kimber Ultra and out of the two I like the Defender a lot, and it's about $50 cheaper, $850.00. Want to see a Springfield Loaded UltraCompact before I make a decision. I would think reliabilty and quality would be about equal on all these models, unless anyone knows different.

I have a compact 1911 that I like very much, it is called the New Agent by Colt. It is the same size as the Defender but it has a different sighting system. For what it is designed to do it does a good job. The sighting system takes a little getting used to, but once used to it, it is accurate.

Stitch, the XD 45 compact is one I have been thinking about too. I have a XD 40 Sub Compact and love it, probably the best weapon I own. That said I also have a full size 1911 and love the look and feel of it too.  Decisions decisions!!!

I agree about getting good quality.  There are a lot of good ones, but I am partial to Colt.  Check out a Colt Officer's Model.  I plan to add one to my collection at some point.  Good luck with your search.

You really need to check out the Colt New Agent .45 ACP. They're going for around $750.00. Three inch barrel with trench sights. It's really a sweet pistol and carries well. Point of fact, it doesn't look much bigger than my Kel Tec PF9. Trust me when I say that the PF9 was forever retired when I got the New Agent.

My Springfield Micro Carry .45 is a nice piece. It's a bit large for my riding vest, but its weight makes it shoot like a dream.  I always use it to re qualify for my CHL.  My new deep carry piece is a Kel-Tec PF-9.

Woof!

Colt Defender (or New Agent) - they really have the best reliability record of all the sub-4" guns, based on many, many, many hours of working with them and getting comments about them (I work in the firearms industry.)
I carried a Defender as my primary CCW gun for three years, shot it often, never had any kind of problem at all. And, they are much more accurate than you'd think. With the cone barrel, they lock up virtually the same place every time.
I'm not saying the other brands are not good! Had a Springfield 3 1/2" for years, carried it all the time I had it, just wanted the Colt horse on the side....the Defender is just so much more accurate and has worked so well, it gets my #1 vote.

I have a Kimber Ultra Carry II, Stainless in .40 S&W that is just a tack driving machine, for a 3" compact anyway.  I had a Ruger that wouldn't hit too well but the Kimber is spot on every time.  And with the Crimson Trace grips it is a formidable weapon indeed.  I shoot 165 gr. Golden Sabre's and it seems to like them the most of all I have tried.

Colt Officers Lightweight ACP for me.  VERY happy with it and have carried it for years.  For whatever reason though, it does not like the cheap remington FMJ ammo.  The new Defender or Commander is on my list of wants as well.  That said, I have shot the Kimbers and Springfields and found both to be very good firearms.  Like someone said above though,  I like the horse on the side....  Whatever you buy, take it and shoot it enough to become proficient in its use.  You don't want to end up in a scrape with an unproven weapon.

I have heard alot of good stuff about Rock Island Armory 3.5" Tactical .45. and only $440.00.  novak sights skeleton trigger and alot more extras. I have handled their full size at the range here and it performed great.  The range officer says that it has had 1000s of rounds thru it, and is extreamly reliable. Think I might have to pick one up.
