I fill up my Deluxe today at about 14 bucks high test. That is about 180 miles. My truck would costs 80.00 for about 350 miles. (4.8).

Substituting bike for truck/car everytime it can possibly work. More so than ever since it now represents a serious savings as well as having a ride.

F-no. I clocked off more than 2500 miles in the last month. I take it everywhere. 75 Mile round trip to work everyday, short trip for errands, date night with the wife, anytime I dont need a trunk. Its crazy what you can fit in the saddlebags. At 43 MPG its a no brainer. Frankly I laugh everytime I fill up for 14.00 with the SUV next to me clocking off 75.00 and probably will only get about 80 extra miles over what I get.

Let the prices rise, hopefully it will force all the owners of the expeditions and excursions and suburbans to park them so I dont have to worry about being run over by one.

2 words....HELL NO!

With the Expedition costing $80 bucks per fill-up I think I'll be riding the scoot more.

We are cutting back on our camping in the camper this year due to the costs. :(

But I guess that means I'll have more free time for joyrides on weekends too! :D

More bike, less truck. Only problem is that I can't tow a tandem axle cargo trailer with it. Not so good for hauling tile & mortar either. F250 Turbo Diesel with a 35 gallon tank, 17 mpg - do the math. 45 mpg with the Low Rider.

At 10 MPG the old Dodge doesn't go far from home anymore. Besides, the Fatboy is more fun anyway. When I can't take the bike, I drive the wifes car. It gets 25 MPG.

Bike costs 20 to fill and gets 250kms.... Bike wins.

I answered yes. I've always favored motorcycle commuting over taking my S10 Blazer anywhere; but I'm not taking off on all day joy rides with no destination in mind either.

In my opinion, the questionwasn't about whether your commuter habits have changed; but whether or not you are cutting back on the recreational riding.

Absolutely not - I am working from home more and using my Land Rover Discovery TD5 Series II way less now. I was doing 80 miles a day and now I am lucky if I do that a week. I have saved a fortune in petrol. Also the wife's given up her car too so we are now a one car one bike family.

Nope, don't think it'll ever change my riding habits. I've been doing more miles per year on my bikes than my car ever since I moved to Florida 6 years ago. I do ride my HD a little less because my gas mileage is better on my other 2 bikes. I get around 50 mpg's on my KLR and have gotten up to 58 mpg's on my V-strom, plus I can put low grade in both of them.

Hell no!!!! Here in the North East and any other area of our great country that sees snow and crappy weather for 4-6 months out of the year and the roadways are treated with salt and are icy and not good for riding. I say - good weather, clean roads while they are here -if I get that I'm going feeling - I'm out of here. I enjoy my bike and the time that I have on it that I'm not going to let gas prices hinder my sport. I know gas prices suck and if it gets much worse I will have to cut back some where else - But it sure as hell aint gonna be the bike!!!![sm=forgetit.gif][sm=noooo.gif][sm=signs006.gif][sm=trust_me.gif]

05-10-2008, 07:59 AM
Hell no! At 40+ mpg, the V-rod see a lot more daily riding and just as much no-destination-in-particular riding.
According to Harley, most HD owners have disposable income. I dispose of mine on tires, gas and tires. If the price of tires would come down I could ride more. I believe this is a problem endemic to the V-rod.

I am going to date my self but... back in '79 during one of Jimmy Carter's manufactured gas shortages, my wife and I took a motorcycle/camping trip to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. The Parks were half empty and gas was easy to get. I keep hoping that this will happen again.

So, do me a favor. Tell your city neighbors that once they get 50 miles outside of town they are going to see closed gas stations and $5/gallon gasif they can find an open station. If we work together, we can make this an enjoyable summer.

...if you have the kind of cash to not worry about it... Salud, Don Corleone!

My problem is that I've got this expensive motorcycle addiction that takes up all my extra cash. I'm seriously considering running drugs or something so I can afford more.

I had intended to do the route 66 Seligman to Kingman run in my 62 pickup last weekend, but decided to forego the nearly 300 mile (from my house)round trip and instead rode my Sportster to Kingman to merely view the show. Day cost me less than $20 instead of almost $200!
I'll cut back on boating this summer, but riding the motorcycle is eco responsible and economical, so I expect to be riding MORE!

If anything, higher gas prices are an incentive for me to use the bike as an all purpose ride, not just for fun.

If we see $5, $6, $7 gas, & unless I mustuse a cage for hauling something or for really crummy weather, my car and truck will be left sitting in the garage, not my bike.

NO Thank Gawd I live in CA and I can ride without the concern of Inclement Weather 95 % of the time as the SUV gets 13 MPG and costs $100 to fill up, the Bike gets 36mpg and $12 to fill (Only 3.4 Gal tank).
