I've seen a lot of bad accidents in my time, even been in a few, but never this bad.

My wife and and I were out for a ride this afternoon and pulled up to it seconds after it happened.  A guy on a road king, was in the left turn lane waiting to turn and a guy in an old full size Riviera came around the curve to fast and drifted into the turn lane and rear ended the rk.  The impact was so hard that the front of the car was almost torn off, the bike was stuck in the debris of the car and the rider was thrown over the roof of the car, needless to say the ambulance didn't need to run lights and siren.

The main reason I posted this is for all the new riders we have, remeber to keep your head on a swivel all and I do mean all of the cars are trying to kill you.  I don't know what this guy could have done differently but it does make me a lot more carefull.

My thoughts are with the rider. Today in a town near me a small plane fell out of the sky and hit a house. 81 year old woman at home at the time. She's fine, pilot died. Ain't safe to stay home either. Life is short, and unpredictable. Live to the it fullest.

I've heard of a lot of stories about accidents involving motorcycles being rear ended and the rider being thrown up in the air.  I wonder if the impact of the accident is what causes the injuries or if it is more the impact of hitting the ground.  I imagine it's both but it's scary to imagine if you are able to realize what is happening before you hit the ground.

Crap like this makes me want to just smack anyone on a damn cell phone or just not paying attn.  I see it all the time with the work that I do.  I know it scares the hell out of me but it won't keep me from riding. Not tring to hijack the thread here but,This reminds me of something simmular that happend last July.  A guy riding a bike lost control and got thrown from the bike and landed in the middle of the freeway.  I came up up it as well seconds after it happened.  Helps when my wife is a nurse.  The guy was in good hands.  The rider wasn't doing too well but I never found his name in the obits.  So I assume he made it.  I just wish people would pay attn.

Prayers out to the rider and his family. I'll often pass my turn, and take 3 rights to go left. What's in front of me is for the most part my responsibility to see/anticipate. Vehicles approaching from behind make me nervous... particularly when there's no good escape route...

"non life threatening" injuries. Good news considering the circumstances!

Very sad... I pray that his family will be okay, and realize that he died doing what he loved...

Probably my least favorite aspect of my job is that I am always hearing about mc related accidents.... I would much rather hear about a great ride than an accident.

The thought of getting hit from the rear makes me as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.  I actually spend as much time if not more glancing in my mirrors as I do looking ahead.  When I first started riding I asked one of my co-workers who has ridden for years why cagers get so close to you.  He told me that they are waiting for you to get 6 feet wide.  He explained that people aren't used to being behind bikes.  Most vehicles are 6 feet wide or wider and people judge their distance to the vehicle if front of them by how wide the vehicle appears.  Since bikes and riders will get no wider than about 3 feet, they are on top of you before they realize.  This is why I installed the Running light/Brake light/Turn Signal module.  I also tap the brakes as many times as possible before and while applying brakes.

I have been rear-ended on a bike before... Fortunately it was low speed at a four way stop... Crushed the fender, but I was un-injured...

It's probably my worst fear though... Because it is one of the most unavoidable situations, regardless of how experienced and careful you are.

Ditto.  I also installed a Backoff flasher hooked in to the LED lights around my tag in addition to the running/brake/turn signal module.

+1 on the run/brake/turn converter, it's GREAT.  I also got the LED lights in the sissy bar, even that's not enough, sometimes.  Kisan's TailBlazer is a "must have", as is their PathBlazer modulator.

I also ALWAYS wear a HIVIZ vest and I just switched to a yellow helmet with SOLAS tape.  Yeah, I look stupid....

I agree on the turnsignal/brakelight conversion kit. I've actually noticed people now seem to stay a bit further back when I'm on the brakes.

I suppose that I need to leave for work earlier and ride slower so that I will have more time to react WHEN (not if) situations like these occur.  Recently I have been leaving later and racing into work along with the rest of the idiots on the road.

In my part of GA Speed Limits are merely suggestions.  10 - 15 miles over the posted limit is not uncommon.  Very dangerous, but not uncommon.

Headlight modulator is definitely on the must have list!

Sorry to hear.

Just a reminder to keep the bike in gear when stopped and always look for anescape route.

Might not have helped this poor guy but you never know.

Be safe everyone and NEVER let your guard down once on the road.
