Where is the stock mounting location for the original big round starter relay (the one that looks like a solenoid)? Can this be replaced with a smaller more modern starter relay?
thanks in advance

I've seen most starter relays mounted on the bottom side of the battery tray
No you need the large starter relay to accommodate the battery cables and the smaller bosh type relay to excite the larger relay. {this is how my 68 is set up} and my buddies 80 fxwg also has both relays with the bosh type mounted on the back side of his battery tray if I recall.

Hi Beau,

On my 79 the relay is the big one and is under the battery tray also.  Make sure your ground is good or you will get nothing when you hit the button.   This gave me fits a couple of years ago.

Yep, it definitely mounts under the battery tray. However on my '77, I have forsaken the starter realy and all the grief associated with it when I moved my ignition switch and starter button. I kept either cracking the relay mount or burning out the realy itself. So, I wired directly from the battery (through a circuit breaker of course) into a high amp momentary button - NAPA number SW10 and have been trouble free for the last five or so years. Works for me.

By the way. If you want to replace the relay with another one, take yer old one to any car parts store and pick up a relay for any early model Ford truck relay. It's sturdier and cheaper than one from Taiwan Ted, Custom Chrome or the Harley stealership.
