I'm looking to buy my first Harley sometime in the next year. At first I was looking at Sportsters, specifically the Nightster, until I realized I wanted something a little bigger and with more range...that 3.3 gallon fuel tank just won't do, and I don't want to have to upgrade 6 months after buying it...I don't have that kind of money.

So then I began researching the Dyna line, and I like what I see in the Super Glide, SG Custom, and Street Bob, especially that last one. I like the Super Glide and Street Bob for their solo seats, and the Street Bob specifically for it's slightly lower riding position and the mini-apes. Is there anything functionally different between the SG and SG Custom? If not, I can rule out the Custom, because I don't need the extra chrome if that's all I'm paying for.

As far as the ground clearance of the Super Glide and Street Bob, is that .4" of difference enough to really be noticeable? The only reason I ask about stuff like this is because the less pricey the bike, the easier it is to justify it. The cost is a bit of a step up from the XL 1200's.



Any help or tips from those of you in the know are appreciated...I'm pretty much a noob at this stuff.

You are kind of asking which is the right girl for you. That being said I do have some opinions after 28 years as a FXguy.Most bang for the buck - Super Glide, and you won't waste time massaging chrome. The Street Bob looks cooler and I like a low bike because of a short inseam although the thickness of your boot soles is part of the equation. I personally don't care for forward foot controls. I'll put my feet up when I get done riding. Go to Harley's site and you can compare models side by side and see the differences. I would assume your dealership will let you throw a leg over a few models to see howeach fits you, and they also have demo rides of different models a time or two a season. Get on the dealers email list. You only live once and it's a better life with a Harley in the garage.

This is really an open ended question. How do you plan on riding, what are your plans for the bike, what do you expect to get out of it?

When I did this last year, my plans were to find a low cost base Super Glide with a few parts already put on that I would keep. A sub $10k bike was the base for another $6k investment. From this I have a bike that runs, handles, and rides like I want.

If you plan on using this as a build platform, buy something that is cheaper and build on it. If you plan on just riding, but the one you like and put the miles on.

The Dyna is an extremely strong platform that can be build up from drag bike, to bar hopper, to touring bike and about everywhere in between.

thing with the superglide is the speedo location....[:'(]
also the bars are more narrow than the superglide custom.... the custom is well worth the extra grand.... wire wheels, fatbob tank, two up setup, chrome, and colors other than black or silver are available..
the streetbob is my favorite of the three and denim rocks.

The SG custom is a lot of bike if that's what you want. I don't like spokes, what other colors are there than black or silver, and... I wanted the sportster front-end on the SG. Lowered with a fork brace and good rubber make for a really great twisty bike.

I just post this to show how flexible and great a bike the Dyna is. This is the most flexible of the Harleys made. It can be so many different things based on your personal preferences and style.

Use your gut and your head.

There is usually one style of bike that you keep coming back to.

Just make sure it fits you, or can be made to fit you.

You can't go wrong with any of 'em.

After looking at a Sportster, I bought a Super Glide, but not the Custom. I don't like wire wheels [deal-breaker] or the speedo on the tank, so the FXD was an easy choice.

Oh, and for color-it's gotta be Black.

looking at the basic price,maybe to get what you really wantcost a few bucks more get what you want life is short,and if later you want something else ,of course we all know that will never happen lol! you will loose any way,i chose a low rider loved the tach,but now i ride a softail deluxe. maybe the fatbob is a good bike ,not a bad price either considering its a harley..just my .o3 worth[sm=biker.gif]

I want to be able to take my Harley to and from work, as well as on trips that might be 2 or 3 hours in distance. Not coast-to-coast road trips, but I want to be able to get some range with it. Also, having parts on it I'd like to keep would be a plus...I don't need too much chrome (the SG Custom) and like mini-apes that aren't overkill (the Street Bob). I think I already know that the Street Bob is the bike for me, but getting over the guilt of the pricetag is the biggest obstacle for me.


Yeah, I don't like that speedo where it is...I like it mounted on the fuel tank more. I prefer the wire wheels of the Custom and Street Bob. Haven't decided if I like gloss or denim more, yet.
