The major difference is the engine and rear shocks. Both are 96 ci. Dynas have a rubber mounted Twin Cam. Softails have a rigid mounted counterbalanced engine. Dynas rear shocks are exposed whereas the Softail are hidden giving the look of a rigid motorcycle. The ride is a little different. My dyna will shake at an idle at a stop but smooth out once it gains speed. The counterbalanced engine will run smooth at idle and vibrate a little at speed. Dynas are way better (because I got one). Sportsters ruled when I had one.

My Super Glide rides like a Cadillac. My buddy's Softail, not-so-much. Either is a great choice.

ORIGINAL: bob37 any technical infe such as frame dimensions which is talleer, longer etc? I don't know the specs, go to the Harley-Davidson website and you can compare specs side by side. Generally speaking, the Dyna is the lightest bike fitted with the "Big V-Twin" engine which a lot of Dyna riders will tell you affords them better handling and a more nimble ride.

Dynas are for riding, Softtails are for posing. Dynas offer superior handling and ride.

I'm with the Idiot on this one- Dyna's are well regarded by many as the best-handling big twin around- not just by HD riders, but the motorcycling press, as well. The V-Rod owners might have something to say about it, but compared to a softail, there is no comparison; a Dyna will show clean heels to any softail around. Experience being equal, there is no way a softail can keep up with a Dyna in hard riding conditions. Not only are they lighter, but they make better power, as the counter-balancer in the Softail engine does take a little of the bark out of the bite. Not much, but if you A/B them in one day, you'd notice the difference. Further, the Dyna is priced better- the Softail family is Harley's best selling line, so they're priced accordingly (a Softail Custom has a base MSRP Higher than a base Electra Glide....go figure). Softails are great bikes. If you buy one, you'll probably love it. But, a Dyna will love you back! And hey, you get the fun-loving Dyna Riders Forum at no Extra Charge! RBN

Depends on what you want to do with a bike. But, when push came to shove, it was the Low Rider over the Deuce hands down.

A lot of people here are saying that Dyna's sacrifice style for performance... Maybe I am 'heavily' biased but I really love the look of the Street Bob, and I actually chose it over a Fat Boy, and I don't regret it, I actually love my ride!

The Dyna frame is not so much "taller" but it goes from the steering neck back to the top of the shocks while the Softail frame goes from the steering neck back down to the rear axle; allowing a generally lower seat height on the softail frames. On the softail the "faux" rigid rear is a huge piece of steel structure, bolted to and pivoting on the frame, so the moter must also be bolted into the frame to keep the driveline aligned, then they counterbalance the motor with gears, a chain and a couple of little flywheels to lower vibrations. On the dyna's (and flh's) the rear wheel and swingarm are bolted to the back of the tranny which is bolted to the back of the engine, all of which rides on rubber inside the rest of the frame to lower vibration. Better suspension system for handling on the twin shock bikes...make mine a Dyna; a fast good handling one..... Thumbnail Image

I chose my Low Rider over a Fat Boy at the "height" of the softtail craze several years ago...and while I can't say that I never doubted my decision, I did choose the road less traveled. No regrets now...

Rounder - - no i dont wish :) i could have had any of the range bar the CVOs. I got married on a FatBoy and have always loved them right from when they first came out. But i spent the last 18 months riding and checking out the whole range, i was pretty sure i would get a FatBoy but figured i should look at everything Harley had to offer. I got on a Street Bob and that was it, despite not being a fan of mini apes and some other minor points, the Street Bob blew me away, it made all the rest seem positively pedestrian by comparison, now this is just for me and everyone is entitled to their own thoughts. I also agree that as long as its Harley then you cant lose, but the look and handling of the Bob is just awesome and every morning i cant wait to get back out on it :) pete

No way that I sacrificed looks when I got my Fat Bob, I got better looks, better handling and a bit better performance for less money. Even if I sometimes get to hear "Harley Parkinson" from a friend of mine because of the vibrations.

I have never heard that "Harley Parkinson". I would check both models out and test ride. I for one like the traditional looking bike and the performance was important for me. I rode the Soft Tails and couldn't get the ride I wanted. The models are both Harley and thats important to me so good luck with your purchase. I for one don't consider the "style over performance issue" the Dyna models look great.

Another difference...Dyna's you sit IN the bike, Softails you sit ON the bike. If you've ever ridden a Softail you'll know exactly what I mean.
