This is a pointless post but why call it a Jiffy Stand on a Harley when the rest of the world calls them kick stands, and while were on the subject why doesn't Harley put on center stands, would it just be to convenient or what? That sure is something that I miss about rice burners. Love my Harley, But I am just wondering if their is a reason for these burning questions.  Please Help.

Why does Harley-Davidson call the side kickstand a 'jiffy stand' in the owner's manual?
In: Harley-Davidson Motorcycles

Jiffy STand
harley davidson has always called it a jiffy stand, at least as long or longer than it has been called a kickstand. H.D. has been around a very long time and had they been more popular in the early years everyone would be calling it a jiffy.
Originally, most bikes had a frame mounted 'center stand'. On most older HD models, there was a center stand clipped to the inside of the rear fender requiring the operator to lift the whole back end of the bike to swing it into place under the frame, the "jiffy stand" was a quick easy method of standing the bike up without getting a hernia...the term jiffy stand was coined to distinguish the center stand from the side or "kick" stand as it could be deployed in a 'jiffy'.

My 1949 Harley WL has both stands, the center stand is only useful when changing the rear tire on the side of the road.

That was gonna be my guess... "Jiffy" is an old term from the 1910 era that meant it was simple/quick to use as opposed to having to lean it against a tree, wall, etc. H-D has been around so long that it's an antiquated term is what you're dealing with...

Center stands are great for backing off tailgaters. If you press it down just hard enough you can throw sparks out that will back everyone off except the cops. Works even better at night.

me thinks sportie doesn't do any maintenace, repairs, I think he pays someone else to do his maintenance. Working on a bike with center stand is almost a neccessity. I always park my bike in the garage on the centerstand, gives me alittle more room to walk around in the garage.   this is the bomb   http://www.wheeldock.com/prod_EZ.asp

I think you are probably right. I don't think that any new bike has centerstands anymore. Apparently a lot of new riders don't work on their bikes themselves. Those of us that did/do may be a dying breed.

Jiffy aka quick - e.g. I'll be done in a jiffy or as per the side stand - I'll be out in a jiffy

What's funny about that is that the manuals say the enrichener is different than a choke, yet the damn handle clearly says "choke" on it.  lol...
