This is a pointless post but why call it a Jiffy Stand on a Harley when the rest of the world calls them kick stands, and while were on the subject why doesn't Harley put on center stands, would it just be to convenient or what? That sure is something that I miss about rice burners. Love my Harley, But I am just wondering if their is a reason for these burning questions. Please Help.

Why does Harley-Davidson call the side kickstand a 'jiffy stand' in the owner's manual? In: Harley-Davidson Motorcycles Jiffy STand harley davidson has always called it a jiffy stand, at least as long or longer than it has been called a kickstand. H.D. has been around a very long time and had they been more popular in the early years everyone would be calling it a jiffy. Originally, most bikes had a frame mounted 'center stand'. On most older HD models, there was a center stand clipped to the inside of the rear fender requiring the operator to lift the whole back end of the bike to swing it into place under the frame, the "jiffy stand" was a quick easy method of standing the bike up without getting a hernia...the term jiffy stand was coined to distinguish the center stand from the side or "kick" stand as it could be deployed in a 'jiffy'.

Here's your answer compliments of wiki.answers.com harley davidson has always called it a jiffy stand, at least as long or longer than it has been called a kickstand. My 1949 Harley WL has both stands, the center stand is only useful when changing the rear tire on the side of the road.

I was still copying while Night Train was posting. I guess that makes our answer (his and mine) twice as right.

That was gonna be my guess... "Jiffy" is an old term from the 1910 era that meant it was simple/quick to use as opposed to having to lean it against a tree, wall, etc. H-D has been around so long that it's an antiquated term is what you're dealing with...
