I think he will. Wasn't even pushed in the Preakness. I hope he does anyway.

I went to the Derby two years ago but stayed in the infield-- that was an experience. I also pride myself on the fact I never saw a horse with my own eyes. I did see plenty of boobs. Good stuff.

I just heard over the weekend that he is going to stand at Three Chimneys Farm, outside of Lextington. He is not going to race past 3 yrs old and they are going to use him as a stud. Can you imagine how much the stud fee will be? The bulk of stud fees for good horses of that calibar are over $100,000, but a triple crown winner?? Illinimeats

Hopefully he will indeed complete the Triple Crown. So many have come so close but ultimately came up short. Just please, not another Barbaro or Eight Belles breakdown. He definitely appears to have what it takes, but the three race sequence of The Crown definitely takes it out of them. Best of Luck to Big Brown!

Yeah, there are so many things that can go wrong before or during the race, but I'm rooting for him. He's a great horse and sure has a good chance. +1 about the stud fees.

And speaking of stud fees, the legendary sire, Storm Cat, retires from stud at age 25 having once commanded a whopping half-a-million stud fee: http://www.kentucky.com/302/story/404271.html And of course all Thoroughbreds must be bred via live cover as the Jockey Club does not allow the use of shipped semen in the breeding of Thoroughbreds unlike most other horse breeding registries.

I don't know jack about horse breeding, but many years ago, a friend who is into racing told me about the "teaser" horse. Apparently, the mare isn't always in the mood (sound familiar?). So if they send in "Mr. $100,000 a Pop" guy, there's a chance he can get his face kicked in by the unwilling gal! So rather than risk the mega-million stud getting hurt, they send in the poor shmuck who never came close to finishing in the money. If she is receptive, they yank him immediately and send in the superstar. Done deal! Of course, if she is not in the mood, the loser horse could be in line for new dentures! Nice job, huh? Now I don't know if this is common today, but this is the way it was explained to me when I went to a Breeder's Cup with my friend in 1991. Maybe some of you knowledgeable horse guys can enlighten us.

Yes, I think it's common to use a teaser, but usually his job is just to "chat the girls up" and maybe smooch on them a bit to get an idea of their receptivity. Trying not to get too esoteric here, but no, these days, the teaser really isn't that much in harms way. However, having said that, anytime you're trying to get two 1000 lb plus bodies together who also happen to have four sharp hooves, big square teeth and lots of raging hormones, things can get a little dicey even when great care is taken to minimize potential problems.

What happened to 8 Belles? I didn't hear about that part, I just heard about Big Brown's win.

She came in second in the Derby but broke down immediately after having broken both front ankles and was euthanized on the track.

ORIGINAL: GAGirl She came in second in the Derby but broke down immediately after having broken both front ankles and was euthanized on the track. Damn, that's a bitch. She ran her heart out to give herself those injuries. Poor girl. She certainly ran the race of her life. Unfortunately it was her last. Fillies with brilliant speed like that who can run with the big boys are few and far between. Another famous filly by the name of Ruffian suffered a similar fate in a match race with a colt by the name of Foolish Pleasure. She was winning when she broke down. JeepMaker, some refer to Secretariat as a freak of nature because of his heart. Some also say that he had those brilliant track speeds that season because the conditions were very dry making for an extremely fast track and which have not been duplicated, that and his competition was mediocre. I still think Big Red was a magnificent animal. They can say what they want, but that horse ran every furlong of the Belmont faster than the last, gaining speed and momentum all the way. Very impressive. I've owned one off the track TB, a big gelding who never raced and leased another mare, and both were on the squirrely side, but the thing about them is that they will try their hearts out for you. My Trakehner Warmblood mare is half Thoroughbred and a red head (chestnut) all the way. She is high strung and tempermental, but alot of fun to ride and she will go all day.

I've ridden TBs & they DO tend to be a bit high strung.

Anyone remember the race horse Cigar? Sold to a bunch of investors for MILLIONS to stand at stud and come to find out, he was completely sterile. Ooops!

Big Brown does look great. Why did 8 Belles break both front ankles. Is it true they pump the horses so full of steroids their bones get so brittle this is liable to happen, or is that myth?

Steroids are used at the track even though they are illegal; how much they are used is anyone's guess. I am not in the industry so really can't say for certain. I would say the more elite stables don't use them because of the quality of the horses they are working with. I wouldn't put it past a hungry trainer with a horse with potential who is trying to get an edge though. ::shrugs:: I believe they do randomly test for them. Honestly, I would say it's more genetics than anything. American TBs are pretty inbred and quite a few of the more popular bloodlines, while they perform well, have lots of leg issues, causing unsoundness which can lead to breakdown. Also, TB's have really sucky hooves for the most part from years and years of the practice at the track of cutting their heels down, giving them thin-soled, paddle hooves, theorectically helping them to "scoop" through the surface of the track and get better traction to propel them forward. Genuine Risk was another famous filly who ran really well. After she was retired to be a broodmare, she was even bred to Secretariat, but she proved difficult to get in foal; stay in foal and then to produce any healthy offspring. I think she only produced one maybe two foals. Then, as mentioned above, Cigar who is one of the most winningest racehorses in recent history, proved famously sterile after he was sold and retired to stud. That too could have been inbreeding, but I did wonder about steroids. But it was probably just genetics. Also as previously mentioned, Secretariat himself was considered a bit of a "freak". He has some renowned as a broodmare sire, but was a disappointment when it came to reproducing himself as a sire of racehorses.
