Anyone seen/use the flashing LED brake lights?  I read the posts in here, but I am not looking for Kuryakyn.

I was behind someone on the highway and they were using them...the would flash when the rider hit the brakes other than that, they were off.  These LEDs were mounted on the sides of the lisence plate.

My wife noticed them about 1/4 mile away and she is hounding me about them.

Anyone help?

Thanks!

I've got them on my bike (it came that way, I didn't put them there). I'm on the fence about them. They're probably good safety features, though I did have one guy pull along side and "warn me" that I had a short in my brake light circuit. Aesthetically, I put them in the same category as assless chaps and fingerless gloves. It'll be interesting to see what the rest of the posts in this thread say.

One dealer had the bike I wanted, but sold all his bikes with this "feature" he adds as a favor. For which he adds the retail to the price. I bought the bike at another dealer, who swapped the other dealer another bike for the one I wanted. I got it at a great price, and without the favor.

Goofy, like the blinking headlight I saw coming towards me the other day.

I installed the HD running lights kit and I've been told they make a big difference in visibility.  The two ambers on the rear are swapped out for red lenses which act as running lights.   When you brake all the lights come on instead of just the single brake light.

I looked at the Kuryakyn kit which has a feature where the brake lights flash 3 times before going solid.  Plus they use the brighter LED lights.  But I went with the less expensive option.

I tend to agree that these are kind of strange even if they do increase the chances that a cager will see you.  I wouldn't mind them if I could use them intermittently with the flick of a switch such as when I was in congested areas.  But all the time seems a bit much to me.

I have the Kuryakyn LED rear turn signals, they work as running lights and flash when the brakes are applied, you can switch that feature off if you want. Worth the money IMO.

I can't stand following people that have them.  It drives me nuts to watch that damn thing blink when it's [the brake] a non-blinking light on every other vehicle on the rode.  Seems to me that it would just cause confusion for people that don't know how they work.  Like riding right up your a$$. Just my opinion, everyone is intitled to have what ever brake light they wish.

I've never seen the blinking brake lights in action but what you say makes sense.  Especially if this blinking happens every time you hit the brakes.  In heavy traffic I can see how that could drive people who were following nuts.   Perhaps I should just stick to my current method which is to tap the brake lights a couple times when I think the guy behind me isn't paying attention to the traffic stopping in front of him.

I couldn't care less about driving anyone nuts. The point is that flashing brake lights tend to get drivers attention better than a normal brake light. I have a Kury flasher that converts my stock turn signals into combination run/brake/turn signals. One of my regular riding buddies has one too, and it doesn't bother me at all.

My RWD tail/brake/turn signal bracket has this feature. On Low intensity all the time for regular running light, left or right side flashes amer LEDs when signaling and the brake light will flash for 3 seconds when the brake is applied and then  remain on in high intensity mode until the brake is released. Wouldn't go back to either a non-LED or non-flashing system for anything. Huge upgrade in visibilty from the back, especially when braking. Not to worried about anyone behind me going nuts from it, 'cuz that means they have seen me.

why would we care about people 'going nuts' over a brake light safety feature in traffic when people already go nuts over loud pipes? We dont care about that do we? I followed a guy with a single flash before it was slightly obnoxious but people stayed off his ass and i just didnt look at it.

just sayin...

I have the Kury Panacea LED brake light that flashes three times and love it! I'll take all the extra help I can get to get me more noticed on the road. When I'm at a stop I'll hit my rear brake off and on just to keep it flashing so some idiot on a cell phone doesn't run me over. It's not perfect, but every bit helps.

I just got 'em for my Fat Bob & they'll be on it before I ride away from the dealer.  I wouldn't be without those things...too many idiots in cages these days not paying enough attention.

I use the Kuryakyn tail-light, but with the standard amber turn signals.   I didn't want one until I rode behind one of my friends with the entire system (led's in the turn signals as well-- all set to flash). what a huge difference in brightness and visibility.  I will admit that the flashing brake light was a bit to much at some points during our trip, but it did help with the visibility.

When I'm riding alone I turn on the flash feature as I think it helps in the visibillity department.  However when I'm in a group I'll put them on the "normal" mode so no flash...

I have them on both my bikes.  On the Heritage all 3 lights are red and blink.  When I use the turn signal the affected light then turns yellow and blinks.  All 3 lights blink 3 times.  Then I watch the rear mirror and release the handle and reapply the brakes repeatedly until I'm sure the person behind me is stopping.

In most states it is ilegal to have flashing (marker) lights on a vehicle. Those are reserved for emergency vehicles.

While I dont mind LED lights (brighter) I wouldnt put something on any of my vehicles that modulated or flashed.

Todd T, can you provide further explanation?  My understanding is that while you certainly can't have flashing lights (blue, red or white) on the front of your bike, it's perfectly legal to have an LED brake light that doesn't blind the driver behind you and that flashes for no more than 5 seconds before changing to solid red.

I saw a semi slam into the rear of a pickup truck, the accordian frame reminded me that I am glad I have flashing lights on the back of mine, it may not stop the rear ender, but I am amazed at how far back people start to slow down behind me. I got the Kisan that flashes over a 4 sec period and starts fast and slows till it is just the light. Got the LED light assembly that is brighter as well. Until people start to pay attention, gotta have some safety to help out while you are ridin!

I'll take any help I can get.  I know a biker got killed August 2006 sitting at a red light.  Woman ran into the back of his bike, knocked him to the ground, and then some how continued forward, ran him over, and killed him.   He was one of the salesman at the dealership I bought my bike.

I think it's just plug n play.  I had mine installed when I bought the bike. I didn't do it but I think you just remove the stock brake light assembly and replace it with the new assemply and plug it in.

I have that taillight and the rear signal conversions that go with the system. I never thought about hitting the brake on and off to keep the taillight/signals flashing when stopped at a red. Good idea!

Cheers!

The Kury install of the standard taillight is simple.  Just pull off the old one, plug in the new one.  Under the seat, find the rear light harness and hook the panacea module in-line with the rear light harness and your done after a few zip ties...

I think mine took all of about 15 minutes to install.

Supposedly the Kuryakyn are made by this company  Cheaper than the Kuryakyn.  It works well.  I run these in my tour pack and they are great.  I run the headlight modulator also.  People have stopped from pulling out in front of me because of the modulator.  With the tail light and the tour pack light no doubt i am stopping.

As for being illegal.  NO WAY.  I have been stopped  in 6 different states.  I carry this document that spells out the regs for it.
http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcycle-technical-articles/Modulator-regs.htm

Every LEO that I point it out to scratches their head calls in and gets a verification on it.  So far I am batting 1000.
