Me and my girls were headed to my mothers Saturday morning in Anderson, SC to visit for the weekend. (2 hour ride) Mark had left earlier to go see his mom in Tenn. as well.

We are cruising along and making good time. We were on I-85 at mile marker 65 just past Inman.

When all of a sudden BAMMMMMMMM. I saw something fall off of the 18 wheeler directly in front of me. I tried to avoid it but I was up against a cement barricade and another 18 wheeler and had nowhere to go but directly into it. All the while I was slamming on my brakes with hopes to not hit it. Yep .........that didn't work out to well.

The car started filling up with smoke and came to a dead stop directly in the fast lane. Cars are slamming on their brakes and swerving all over the place. We were barely missed 4 different times.
I was so afraid for my girls cause we were on a curve and the traffic coming at us at 75-80 mph couldn't see us until they got to us.

I waited for traffic to clear and we dart across the interstate to the grass. One nice lady stopped but all she said was .....you might wanna get them girls off the edge of the road.............this road is deadly and then drives away. DUHHHH no way dumb butt.

After a few minutes the DOT trucks show up and they decide to push my car to the shoulder of the road..............which shattered my fiberglass bumper..........but that was the least of my worries at this point. The guys start walking down the road cause it seems I left half of my car strewn all over the road. I wasn't sure of the damages but I knew I needed a ride at this point. (And Mark is already 5 hours away from us )
They come back a few minutes later with a part of my drive shaft and a HUGE piece of metal.
It seems the 18 wheelers brakes..........the WHOLE metal thing had fallen off and was laying upside down in the road and that was what I hit.
Yeah me

The DOT must have read my Harley hat cause he says " Looks like you won't be making bike week".........screw you.....I'll be there.

Anyway:
Later on that night I get a call from our mechanic who came all the way from Charlotte to tow it back to our shop.....and he said my car looked like it was gutted underneath it. Just from looking over it.....I ripped off the oil pan, the muffler tips, the entire exhaust, the drive shaft, crushed the front and rear bumper. After that I told him not to tell me anymore cause I was to upset. From what he said.........it's a total since to fix it will cause more than it's worth.

I just got it out of the shop Friday after doing $700 worth of crap to it. It needed a new heater coil and while it was there we did a complete over haul on it ( new battery, cables, oil change, tires rotated....blah blah blah) so we could put it up for sell to get me a new car.

But the worst part of it all...................I only have LIABILTY ON IT !!!!
We paid it off a while back and Mark dropped the full coverage. No towing...no road hazzard, no nothing. All I got was up crap creek.

This mothers day gift was the best ever......................we were alive and got to spend it all together. Try topping that one.

Just for the record here Amy.  When you say "Girls" define what you are talking about.

OK, good.  I'm glad the Girls and the Twins came through everything OK.  Actually, I'm just kidding and I'm glad nothing worse happened than some car damage.

It's ok............I could care less about the car.  I just thank God we were not hurt.
Honestly........we were in a VERY dangerous situation being on this road  ( SC's most dangerous) and in the spot where the car stopped at.  I am probably the happiest mother alive today.

Mark came in from his trip earlier and was mad cause he had hit a piece of rubber on the road and it scratched his new car.

He hasn't seen mine yet.

We may be attending a funeral after all.

I called them and the Highway Patrol yesterday to see if anyone called and they said no.  I guess I am just up the creek on this one.

The HP told me another lady just back behind me hit the cement wall and wrecked her car trying to avoid the stuff to.  She was ok but she did damage the side of her car.
I was scared to death he was gonna say from the parts that fell off my car and then I would have had to pay for hers to.

Needless to say, everyone is glad you or your girls were not hurt. I would approach DOT to see if they could help find the truck.  There is a chance they could find it if they would take enough interest.

that sucks big time. hang on to that mechanic, any tech that will drive to BFE to take care of you is a good guy. you and your girls ( and the twins, thank god) are all safe, it will all work out in the end and you have a great story to tell next year on mothers day weekend.

Amy,

I am glad you and your kids are ok. I wonder if those parts have serial numbers on them. I am not saying anything bad about LEO's but some don't go very far in helping you out. Why don't you PM CSI Topeka and ask if the part can be traced to it owner.

The Dot guys took the pieces with them as they were cleaning up all the parts I left behind to.  When I hit it ....it was one solid piece but it was broken all up from me dragging it underneath my car.

We are waiting to hear if the Insurance company is going to cover it. It seems our Agent only had liability and towing on me. Mark had told him "not" to take everything off when we dropped it down.  So they said right now it is a 50/50 chance for me.   But they know it's totalled.
Turns out the damage was.......the drive train, the drive shaft, the transmission, hole in gas tank, oil pan, brake lines, cross member ( I think that's what it was called), some arm thing, the exhaust, the flooring part of the frame was bent, the front and rear bumpers..... and it seems that since i lost all the oil......the motor locked up as well.    And that's all from just looking over it.
It literally took a path straight down the middle of the car and destroyed everything.
What's sad though..........other than the fiberglass bumpers being cut a little and a small crack in both................the body of the car is still in perfect condition.

Mark said this was the perfect time to drop a V8 in it if I wanted.

If it was the Maxi(booster)that fell off the DOT would shut the tractor and trailer down, being how the maxi is conected by two studs and has a shaft that connects to the adjuster witch turns the S-cam witch spreads open the break shoes to stop the trailer, when you lose air pressure to the Maxi(booster)that one certain tire/set of duals will lock up and you have to manuly adjust the slack adjuster as to not make the wheel lock up......
It would be interesting to find out what exactlly feel off.......I used to D.O.T trailers for 3yrs as a semi triler mech.....

My guess would be it was a big chunk of a brake drum.

The Dot just said it was his brake and that it had disintegrated and that it happens often on big trucks.
When he brought it to show me what I hit , it was in pieces since I had dragged it a bit. It just looked like a big curved piece of metal to me.  Kinda in a U shape.
