I had an alligator when I was a kid.  It bit the crap out of my dad and died about a week later from undetermined causes.

I remember those--I also remember that the guy who came up with that idea probably made a million bucks!
With that being said--we had a iguana lizard. He was about a foot long to start then grew to over 3 foot in length. He was a mean dude as he never liked to be held. The kids would let him out to run around--then when time to put him back in his cage--no one including the dog could hardly get near him as he would slap the piss out of ya with his tail heehee

No pets now, but as a kid we had some strange ones.  We had a raccoon for a while.  (What a mess that guy made when we'd let him out of the cage to eat in the kitchen.)  A banded water snake that lived in a huge fish tank.  Fed it goldfish.  I got my brother a tarranchila (sp?) which he carried around in a crown royal bag and had a little gold necklace for a leash.  He'd open the bag and let it walk around on the bar when we went out drinking.  That was a good conversation piece.  When I was 9 years old, I caught a tiny rattle snake while camping in Kentucky (I was used to the garter snakes in Illinois and didn not know any better.)  Put it in a giant pickle jar and took it home after the camping trip.  I snuck it to school with me one day and the principal called my mother to come and get it.  When I got home, the snake was dead and the jar smelled like nail polish remover.  I suspect my mother did it in.

We're back to conventional pets now, one retarded dog, two cats, one ball python, and some fish.

In our younger days we had a few "odd" pets though.

Snakes - 12 ft Burmese python, 9 ft Boa, 6 ft reticulated python, three smaller Boas, two ball pythons, and a black snake.

One good sized Iguana

One family of hooded rats were pets, the other rats were raised as snake food. The rat colony sometimes reached 100 members. Feeding day whittled that down a lot though.

Two rabbits, several hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs.

One 225 lb mountain lion

Over the years we've had about a dozen cats, and one other dog.

I wouldn't have the energy to deal with some of the exotic animals we used to have anymore.

I used to have a Mexican Red knee Trantula when I was younger. It was cool watching it feed I would catch small lizards in the yard and throw them in with it and it would wait until they got close and ponce on them it was kinda cool.

I have or have had: Iquanas, tarantulas, a few snakes, salt water aquarium, plus the customary dogs and cats, down to one each of those.

I'm just curious what a helomonster is.  Do you think she meant Gila Monster?  If so they don't get nearly that big.  Does it look anything like this?

For thumper05:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNPOdffkkLo

Had no idea you could show jump bunnies.  Horses yes; bunnies no.

Only conventional pets now, but growing up we had lizards, boas, a pet fox, a Coatimundi, and a pet Blue Jay.  The Coatimundi was pretty neat but my grandmother who was then coming down with Alzheimer's perversely antagonized the Coati, so we gave her to the Atlanta Zoo, cuz, well you know, we just couldn't part with granny.    The pet fox was really neat too.  Purred like a cat.
