What are some of the lesser known sites or roads that you have enjoyed in this area. Not looking for the "usual suspects" but something that maybe you stumbled upon. Thanks.
Didn't stubble on much cause i plot the best roads in each state before hand using web sites......not really much in South Dakota but the Black hills, needles hiway, 385 to Deadwood, Lead, then 14a to Spearfish. These areas are nice but if you got time....Beartooth, ColoradoandUtah is where you really want to be. Have a great trip where ever you go....
When 700,000 bikes fall upon the Black Hills there are no unknown roads. One I like is to Huelett Wy a neet little town and you can stop and see Devils Tower not far from there. A nice day ride from the Black Hills.
Well, I like to head into the Black Hills (from Montana) on 212. it splits of I-90 at Crow Agency, goes through Lame Deer, Broadus, slices the corner of WY and then down to Belle Fourche (****. bell foosh) and then to Spearfish. Never a lot of traffic, and you're not likely to see other bikers.
(Assuming you're coming from the east--most people do) Ride into the Badlands/Black Hills on the less-beaten path. From Chamberlain on I-90, head south to Winner, then pick up US 18, go through Mission, take a side trip to Wounded Knee before hitting Pine Ridge and Oglala, then on to Hot Springs and Wind Cave, Custer, etc.
Not many people explore the southern Black Hills, even during the Sturgis frenzy and you'll see more badlands then are in the Badlands NP.
If you are continuing west, break into WY from Custer on 16. That is some wide open country. Or head up into Montana from Spearfish and Belle Fourche.
I'm planning on going to the Black Hills/Sturgis area in July coming from NE Iowa and I'm going to take the southern route ascross to Rapid City. Hwy 44 and 18 to Interior for the first day. First time out there and I perfer two lane rather than interstate. I can always run I-90 back on the return trip. Have a good ride.
There are tons of little pieces of roads on maps you get for free in the Black Hillstry them all!! There aren't that many paved roads out there. If you find the time do a circle tour on 16 W from Rushmore to New Castle, Wy and then head North on 16 to Moorcroft, switch over to 14 N and 24 N to go to Devils Tower and then continue on to Hulett, WY, at Hulett continue on 24E to Alt 14 N to Belle Fourche. \\;
