Transmission Knock? 2003
Hey y'all. I've recently gotten passenger pegs and a 2 up seat (which is great) but I've noticed when I'm decelerating with her on back and using the transmission to slow us down there is some clatter going on down there. I assume it's in the tranny and it occurs most often in 2nd gear. This never happens without the added weight and while it is avoidable I would at least like to know what it is causing the noise. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I would check your primary chain tension. It may be too slack. This may be causing it to bounce around during engine breaking. As for why in second gear, it may be the speed is just right that it is near a natural harmonic for the length of the chain, making the osculations worse.
Just an idea... |

RE: Transmission Knock? 2003
Start slowing a bit sooner using your brakes first when you're 2up, if you decelerate too fast with the engine and THEN start braking, it can sound like the damn clutch is trying to fight it's way outta the primary sometimes;).
Anyone that's had a few near-misses and/or had to go from 55ish to 0 real quick probably knows this sound/feeling as well. It won't typically destroy anything but it's not very good at the same time. With the added weight and the fact that that's the ONLY time it happens, it just sounds like you're braking too late on decel. No biggie. |
