I installed a Screaming Eagle 6 speed (used) in my 04 RKC It makes a light grinding noise in 4th gear only. Also has metal shavings in the oil. Any known problems with SE 6 speeds?

The metal shavings & noise would indicate a problem where something is coming apart.

Thats what I thought. Just drained the oil into a clear container and letting it settle. There are very small metal pieces that show up better if held up to the sun. Lots less the an first time I changed it. Has about 1000 miles this time. Took it to the local dealer and they took it for a ride and could not hear anything. I heard it within 1000 feet. More to follow.

Did the dealer install it? A used trans should throw off little or no breakin debris.

I had no noise, shifting, or debris problems with a Screaming Eagle 6 Speed in my 2001 FLHRCI.  It now has about 10,000 miles on it.

You might try changing the fluid again and go with Mobil 1 syn. gear oil. ( Just a note I tip my bike to the right with the drain plug out to get all the oil out of the case. )

The oil settled and not much metal in it this time. Some but it is so small you have to hold it up to the sun and see the shiny specs. Still sounds funny in 4th. I decided to pull the gearset to have a look. Any idea how to remove the outside shift forks? Middle one slides right out but the end 2 hit the case. Started to rain so it is on hold till tomorrow. Also any secrets to pulling the gearset? Have it loose and it moved maybe 1/4" then stopped. I think the shift fork is stopping it but stopped for the rain.
THANKS for the input.
JIM

Is it fuzz or hard metal fragments, if it is just fuzz that is normal for all gear sets, as far as the noise use a good syn gear oil, such as amsoil 75w-90 that should help reduce the noise.

I'd like to thank all who replied. I pulled the gear set and inspected it. All seemed fine. The metal was fine gold colored powder. The amount that came out lessened with each oil change. The case was pretty much clean by the time I  opened it up. All I can figure is maybe the previous owner slammed a few gears without the clutch as the blocker rings are the only golden parts. Feels better to have personally inspected it as I have a 6000 mile ride planned in June.
