Bought my first new Harley a few weeks ago. I bought an 08 night rod special, denim black with ABS. I've been driving bikes for 20 years and decided to come over to the dark side. I got about 300 miles on it and noticed that when driving down the road at about 3000 RPM's or less it has a slight hesitation (the bike jerks a little) when you hold it at a constant speed. It drives fine and any higher RPM.  To be honest, I don't know much about Harley's and was wondering if someone else had this issue. Does it have anything to do with the break in period? Other than that issue, the bike is an absolute blast to drive.

Thanks for your time,

Revolution engines are designed to operate at a higher RPM than their air-cooled brothers. Up your RPM slightly and you'll see the problem disappear.

it has to do with the oxygen sensors - the bike runs too lean at lower RPM's, causing it to hesitate.  It's all EPA emissions BS, get an SERT/Power Commander/Fueler box and it'll fix it up for you.

I'm glad I read this post, as this is a question I was curious about also. I just bought a new 08 V rod last week and have put about 400 miles on it. I noticed that lug too, and I just assumed it wasnt anything wrong with the bike......like 08nightrod said possibly being the break in period for the bike. I did notice very quickly that these bikes are most most definately not meant to be run at low RPM's...... I am looking forward to a log and meaningful relationship:)

While we are on this subject, I have found myself a lot more comfortable keeping the v rod in a higher rpm range than the owners manual suggests. I only hit 3rd gear once I get close to 35......4th comes at 45, 5th soon after............. I am new to bikes so if anyone has some constructive criticism for what I say I would love to hear it. Pardon me 08 nightrod, I am in no way intending to hijack your post.

Since I live in central WI the average temps last month were 40-50 degrees.  The hesitation seemed to be more noticable when it was cold.  A couple times I went to work and it was 38 degrees, wow was that cold.  Lately it has been warmer (~65) and the hesitation has gotten a little better but it is still there. Other than that, I got about 750 miles on it and it is a blast to drive.

It's hard to get the vrod up to speed. 90 in 3rd gear, I forget I have a 4th and 5th.
