Default 1969 XLCH- front forks

I need to know which valve body(upper and lower) goes were. One has holes around it,the other is solid. The manual is of little help. The exploded view doesn't help either.Any help would be appreciated.

Ziggy......
The lower valve is the one with holes in it. The upper valve has no holes.
Install the lower valve body with the holes facing down

Starting at the top of the stack up you will have, in this order:
The shock tube.
On that goes the piston
next is the retaining ring
next is the upper valve body (no holes)
next is the valve washer
next is the lower valve body (holes pointing down)
last is the retaining ring.......................pg

edit note: This is how the 1968 through 1970 forks go together.
1971 and 1972 are a bit different.
1973 and newer are different again.

Thanks Piniongear ,I have been watching this site for a while and you seem to be the one to ask about sportsters. The upper valve body without the holes goes open side down on to the piston? I just want to make sure its right. I started to rebuild it this year, owned it since 1973 ,bought it wrecked, fixed it and rode it till the trans went. The trans was rebuilt in 1984 it's been sitting ever since. The top end is still good, new rings, and still 900cc. I don't have alot of money(thanks to George)so it will take me sometime to get it done.If I run into any trouble ,I know who to ask. Thanks again

The piston is above the upper valve body. Here is the stack up view for you. Ignore the hand written notes which pertain to 1971-1972.
Your forks are as shown in the top view (1970) items 1 thru 7.........pg
