Not speedo...tach cable goes there.  Speedo goes  to the front wheel.

72xlch said it was a speedometer plug, but that is not quite correct.
A 1973 Sporty had the speedo on the front wheel (as far as I know anyway).
The plug you point to is a plug for the hole that the tachometer drive once sat in. The tach is driven off one of the front cylinder cams and it needs a drive piece where the plug is now placed on your bike to connect the tach cable to......pg

That is the tach drive. Plugged off with a cap on top. Drive appears to still be there. Oh God, do something with that seat. That makes my ass hurt just looking at it.

Cool bike! I'd change a few things, but I'm sure you have plans for it, too. A friend of mine had a Sportster with that profile (except it had a hardtail), and we went for a spirited ride one day in the twisties. He was pushing it in the curves as much as he could, and from behind him, I found out why they call them "drag" pipes. His pipes dragged the road pretty badly every time he went around a tight right-hand curve...

Hey thanks guys makes sense! this bike has no tach, no speedo, no front brakes, no turn signals and no mirrors lol. But yes I do have plans for it! a seat who needs a seat real men ride on diamond plate!! lol JK   actually its not that bad well for short rides anyway.

I also get some oil spilling out onto the exhuast from a bleeder valve on back of generator you can see it in the pic as well. what causes this and can I fix it?

Thats the breather. You are supposed to have a pipe there that runs down below the frame. Ya can even get em in chrome.

lol its how I got the bike and actually its not that bad specially since I have cut it down a bit so its not so wide. Im also going to add some 1/4 rubber to the back to help with vibration a bit. It will have to do for now as a previous owner ground off the seat mounting brackets!
