Now that all the old concrete is busted out, it's time to construct. Framing and stair stringers are AC2, deck and treads are Timbertech grey, risers and fascia Weatherbest grey (a little darker) and posts/rails/ballusters are Timbertech Radiance Rail Black. I found these real cool LED lights by De-Kor that are about an inch in diameter and have a 30 degree down angle for the risers. Here's the advice needed: the 22 ga wiring will be under the porch, any experienced suggestions on what to sheath them with? Squirrely man or another fuzzy creature can bite through the insulation just to P me off, I was thinking PVC in 1/4 or 3/8. Anything else available? Greenfield would be overkill, how about PEX tubing?

Hi Chi, Saw your post and I'm going through the redeck thing right now. As far as a cinduit, have you looked an metal (emt) conduit. It's cheap as all get out and will really protect your wires. As to your decking material, are you already commited to Timbertech? I spent a good deal of time and research the last couple years on what to replace my pressure treated wood with. Wood in a big, big pain with tons of maintence. Looked into the composits and cause they contain a good amount of wood fibers, they will fade out and there's no restaining them and they will stain from stuff dropped on them. Last year I finally found a great material. Going with solid PVC decking. The brand is AZEK which you can find on a google search. a bit more than composits but no fading, nothing will stain it, salt won't hurt it. Just now I'm putting it down and it's looking great. Just thought I'd put in my two cents. Dan

Dan, I found Azek a bit late. Their "clay" color is real close to my sage siding. I just finished the project before the weekend and am now doing a couple things on the bike. I'll have a ton of pix to post real soon. For the wiring and lights, I found "De-kor" led lights. These are fantastic, they're about 7/8" round and since they're wired w/22 ga, the 3/8 spiral plastic you find at pep boys or the home center keeps squirrely man from chewing the wires. I continued the spiral into the house for the transformer and then jumped my porch light switch to a dedicated outlet for the T-former. Now the LED's light when I hit my porch light switch, beats a timer anyday. BTW, Azek used to be called Pro-cel. When I found the De-kor's, I hooked up with an outfit called deckbuildersoutlet.com. Timbertech is what I used for the fascia board on my back deck (Veranda for the rest) I was impressed with how much harder and harder to scratch the Timbertech (or Weatherbest which I used for the front stair risers) are than Veranda or Azek. Trex doesn't even figure into the conversation. Now, I've got Marcato's Speaker/light postcaps on my wish list to go on the back postcaps I didn't put solars on. Sometimes there's La Cucaracha music I gotta drown out!

Chi, I'm looking at the 30 degree step lights also. Did you get them locally or mailorder and you find any good prices. Can these lights be wired to an existing transformer. Already have several and plenty of wattage. Can you just use a forstner bit to drill out the hole or did they make these lights some sort of stupid special size. Thanks and look forward to seeing your pics. Dan

Dan, the De-kor light kit included 8 lights, transformer, timer, wax-filled wire nuts and the forstner bit. It's just a hair smaller than 7/8", if you use a standard 7/8, you might want to put a dab of silicone or poly to keep the light housings tight. I priced the separate components and it made more sense to buy the kit. Outdoor essentials is the distributor in my area, MSRP on the outdoor 8 light kit is $238.00. They turned me on to deckbuilderoutlet.com who bought kits when they had a $20 off promo so it was $218.00. I plugged in my Kodak yeaterday and was able to take night pics, today I'll take daytimes and try to post 'em. If you can't find a retailer in your area, try Tom at dbo.com (630)208-8182. They might be able to give you a better deal on some of the other stuff, color-matched screws, hidden fasteners, brackets, etc. 2 years ago, when we did the back deck, we used "Deckorators" glass panel balusters in bronze, now they also have smoke in addition to clear. Those would have been preferred, or now even better yet, De-kor makes glass panels with embedded fiber-optic lighting. I'll snap some pics of the back and try to post as well.
