After several hot restarts and as many kickbacks, the Compu Fire Jackshaft and Ring gear kit broke today.  Can't complain too bad.  It broke in the driveway before we went riding.  Must be a large piece of gear. The noise was scarey, but I got it shut down before it got into the primary gears / chain or grenaded the case.

Has anybody had any luck with the 9/66 ratio kits?

I have other options, like cranking the motor over manually with the solenoid switch with the bar switch in the off position.  I've been using the starter bump procedure figured it'd last a long time.  I think I can also program my DTT not to fire the first couple of revs. prior to the ignition sparking for start.

Any other suggestions?  It's an '02 Softail with the original stock starter that works fine.  Compression is between 9.8-9.9 : 1, with 37G's adv. 2 deg. and approx. 3.60:1 gearing.  Primary gearing is 23/37 which I know is straining the starter to begin with.

I would look at why you get so many kick backs. Having the ingintion not fire will just strain the motor even more as it will have to psuh the engine past tdc on a compression stroke without the engine fireing. Reason you dont have them frie straight of on a kicker is so you can ease the engine round ready to kick without the thing kicking back and launching you into orbit. I ran a 95" dyna and never had any issues with it kicking back and that was just on a stock harley primary.

I also went through many starter parts. I like the Compufire 10/84 set I have installed in mine, I think the 9/66 set will lower your gear ratio too much ( from 8.4-1 to 7.3-1 )and put MORE strain on you starter. I also have the DTT ignition and have mine set for 2 revolutions before it fires. This has eliminated any kickbacks on my motor. I do have compression releases installed and have always used them but I still used to go through a LOT of starter parts.

All good advice, Thanks.  I think I'll start with programming the DTT to supress the fire till the motor is rotating.  I also have the option to manually engage the starter with a push button on the solenoid and turn the ignition on while it is cranking.  Either way I may have an answer.  Understand the further gear reduction with the 9/66 gear set.  Evolution Industries offers a new 84 tooth gear for $102.00.  Haven't pulled the bike out of the trailer from MBBW yet to drain and disassemble the primary to see what is broken and what I need to fix.  I had higher hopes and more confidence in the Compu Fire ring gear. Figured it was a good quality brand name, ya da ya da.....Oh well looks like an ignition adjustment and different starting technique may prevent a rehap.

On the brite side, it broke in the driveway before the final ride to Broadway not 60 feet away from the trailer....??Silver lining...??
