I remember making a joke many posts ago about the guy selling the "Heel guard" at Timonium for riders and passengers. "My girlfriend melted her heal off her shoe- now she walks in circles- Don't let this happen to you!"................... Well, from the I never thought it would happen to me department- Monica lost a left heel to my NEW RINEHARTS......... So the question is (AFTER buying new Harley boots, and tossing thos riding shoes), BEst way to get the damn melted black vinyl, plastic, or whatever the heck it is off my new pipes WITHOUT scratching, or damaging them!
Thanks in advance,
BRUCE

Bruce, Brillo pads work well, the steel wool is softer than the chrome, and it won't scratch. Use that in combination with a good chrome polish and you'll be in there. How bad is the build up of heal? Is it a clump or just a black smear?
Bruce, Sometimes I will run the heal of my boot across the exhaust leaving melted goo. I use a product called Blue Job. Picked it up at a local bike shop.

Another thing that works well is to get the pipes nice and hot, and use a popsicle stick to scrape it off. I have always been nervous about the steel wool idea, even though I know it won't scratch, I just can't bring myself to try.
One thing to AVOID - someone told a friend of mine to use Easy Off oven cleaner. Although this will remove the melted stuff on the pipes, as soon as the overspray hits your paint, it's going to burn it. If you spray Easy Off on hot pipes, it vaporizes into dangerous steam, which eats paint. My friend John found that out the hard way, so don't make the same mistake.
i use turtle was chrome polish, it works great on cold pipes, and really awsome on hot pipes. works every time no problems at all, and the great part hardley no elbow grease needed!
