The HD and Clymer manuals I have state to adjust the primary chain at the tightest point but don't really say how arrive at the tightest point. I have a floor jack to lift it with so from there what is it I do to find the tightest point? Thanks

We actually had someone post about this over in the Sporty forum a few days ago.

Being that your bike is a '97 and your primary chain is well broken-in, you will be hard pressed to find a tight spot in it.  If it were newer, it would be evident that there is a tight spot somewhere by putting the bike in 5th and rotating the wheel while the adjuster is completely loose.

Simplest thing to do is just adjust the chain to spec per the manual using the slack adjuster.  You really don't need to worry about finding that tight spot unless you've got a brand new chain.
