I just got a motorcycle lift and since I bought the bike used and don't know the "real" history, I figure I should change all the fluids. I'm thinking about going with royal purple. I'm sure there is a lot of debate on which is better/worse, but I'm not looking for that argument. I'd just like to know what fluids there are to change? I guess I'm a bit confused on the term "primary" I hear that some. I'm assuming that the ones to change are motor oil, tranny & brake?

Thanks, J.

The V-rod doesn't have a seperate engine and transmission. The drain plug in the pan takes care of it. I suppose you can change the brake fluid if you want. The coolant should be good for 10 years or 100,000 miles.
I change the oil and oil fiter, wash the air filter (I have a K&N) and replace the tires. Not much else to do.

Thanks for the info. What about the clutch, does it have a separate fluid?

Nope. It's all in the crankcase. Uless you mean the hydraulic clutch lines. Less need to change that than the brake fluid.

It has clutch hydraulic oil, but nothing different for the internals. Just the one oil.

I would change the clutch and both brake's fluid. Your '02 is going to use DOT 5 fluid. You should also test the antifreeze and replace it if it is questionable.

Don't forget to replace the blinker fluid as well.

Haven't changed the blinker fluid for a while. I thought recomendations are every 200 miles. Maybe that's why the bike blinks wrong.

Speaking of the blinkers.....I recentely put smoked lenses on both ends. They came with amber bulbs. Ever since I swapped them over, when I turn on either blinker they blink like normal for 5 blinks or so then speed up to a fast blink(kinda like when one is burned out on a car) Perhaps it is some sort of built in feature? Any ideas?

No. The bulbs have a lower amperage requirement than the original bulbs and they are making the bike think that one of them is burned out (thereby using less amperage) You can live with them, get new bulbs with a higher amp requirement, or buy an equalizer (which you'll need if you ever install L.E.D. blinkers, as they use far less amperage than an incandescent bulb)

I put LED's on the front of the OL's bike with the conversion but never put an equalizer on it and it blinked fast for about the first 2 times the lights came on then was fine from then on? almost like it learned they were on there...

I got the oil changed and I bled the front brakes. I felt better after I removed the "Amsoil" filter that was on it. Like I said earlier, I don't know the origional owner or what he did. I think it would be safe to assume if he used that filter he prolly did decent maintenence. I was all set on royal purple, but the day turned out nice and I ended up riding to the local dealership. I was planning on getting a o.e. dipstick as mine has the analog temp gague stick and Its very difficult to "see" where the oil is on that one. So I figured I'd just get oil and a filter as well since I was already there. I left with the screaming eagle synthetic and a stock filter....I forgot to get a dipstick

The front lever was a bit mushy so I bled all the fluid and replaced it with fresh. Somehow the mushyness did not really change, no matter how many times I bled it.

Thanks for the info on the bulb amperage.

The TSSM does multiple things.  It monitors the current when the singals are blinking and if it's low, indicating a burned out bulb then it will start blinking at twice the normal speed after the 4th normal blink.  You either have a burnt bulb, or an open cicruit in the turn signal wiring, or a stuck switch at the handle bar.  LED turn signals will also cause this issue because of the much decreased load LED's have compared to filamented bulbs.
