Any one running their gps using the suction mount? My suction mount will seal down on the gas cap cover of my EG Classic, seems tight but will it work loose?

I have run mine there and also attached to the windshield. I wrapped an elastic band around the middle of the mount and slid i under the gast tank lid just in case it came loose, which it did when I turned too sharp and my cupholder knocked it loose, but the band kept it from falling to the ground. I rap the band over my mirror when attached to the shield. It makes it easy to remove and put in the tour pak and saves it again from hitting the ground. Good luck to you.

why take a chance when there are so many secure mounts available ?

That's true and I'm considering some other mounts. My problem with them is they all seem to be butt ugly.

I have used it this way on rentals for a quick fix and did not have any problems on a 600 mile trip. I also used a safety cord. With that being said I use the zumo bike mount not the best looking mount but secure.

I use the suction mount on my Zumo when I use it in the cage but too many things could go wrong using it on the bike.

You might look at my post from a couple of days ago. I bought another mount for mine, put a stud in the bottom of the mount and drilled a small hole in my windshield bag. I secured it with a wing nut and flat washer. It looks good when mounted and when not in use, I remove the entire mount and put a decorative screw in the small hole.

The problem I found with mounting mine is there isnt a specific mount for my Magellan. I checked into ram mount and by the time I bought the stuff I would need to mount it, it would have cost me more than what I have invested in the GPS. The suction cup seemed pretty tight on the gas cap lid. It would also mount to the face of the tach pretty tight. I ended up finding a handle bar mount on e-bay. I have thought about the safety cable thing , I just don't see a good way to go about this.

It will work just fine until some afternoon you will look down and a $ 500.00 GPS unit is gone. Go with a RAM mount or some other good brand.

I understand what your saying about the gps being stolen, but that won't be a problem. the gps will only be used at certain points of a trip, mostly after I've arrived at my destination to help find myself around the area. Also I'm to cheap to buy a 500.00 unit, I bought a factory rebuilt nuvi 200 for 135.00, it fits very nicely in any pocket. As another post said if I'm not careful I'll have more in the mount then the gps.

Dontdropit, like you I'm too cheap to put out $500.00 on a GPS unit. I have the same unit as you a nuvi 200 and went with the Ram mount system that clamps to the handlebar. It's been awhile, but I think the system only cost about $35.00 or so. When I'm not using the gps the only thing that shows is the u-bolt and ball on the mounting system. The ball on the mount on mine is black, but I was riding with a buddy last week and he had a chrome one, which looked better to me. Although the ball is only about 1" in diam. I think the chrome would blend in better.

Should of read your post first.. yes $35.00 We use a $148.00 TOM TOM 1 .. I just could not see spending the big bucks when this one works so good.

ballpeen, I've been looking at a mount like that on ebay at 35.00. Hows the vibration at idle, does it make it difficult to read the gps? I've thought about that because the bars on a bagger shake some at idle.

It does shake a little at an idle, but not enough to mess up the gps unit ,, get it above 1200 RPMs and your good to go. I think that being down on the bar a bit really helps. I would suggest that you go through RAM Mounts web site, they will refund if you do not like the set up, seemed to be pretty good people to deal with.

I probably should tell you,, we had the suction cup on ours for about,,,, oh,,, I would say,,,,15 miles, It came off and I caught the unit in mid air.. This is why I went the solid mount.
